hi all. just a brief introduction of myself. i am currently a design student who is working on my final major project in product design.

i am doing on sea transportation design.

i have this concept of a 'yacht-liked' boat design, with the 'glass bottom' capabilities for private used.

any comments or suggestions? looking forward for any ideas or feedbacks.

There won't be much to see from a glass bottom unless the yacht is in very shallow water. Too shallow to operate a yacht safely. It would make a lot more sense for one of the yacht's small boats to have the glass bottom feature. Then the yacht could remain in deep water, while the small boat carries guests over to the shallow area for a look at the sea floor.

I agree Kelly, I mean it is fine to put in one if you have the money and resources to do it BUT in terms of functionability in terms of viewing sealife on the seafloor it wouldnt be feasible. What happnes when you cruise into places like the Emms, Thammes and so on where the water is murky. To see anything from a big glass bottom in a yacht, the yacht would have to position itself in very shallow water as Kelly said and that could jeapordize the yacht's bottom, morespecifically the glass wall. Even though that would be made from some acryllic based, sandwiched and laminated infused glass.

It makes more sense to have it in the tender/s that does not have so much of a restricted draught.

Dragging up a dead thread; I've put some thought into this, while a glass bottom would do very little good in most places at night you can turn on lights and attract phototaxic critters, and these often bring in larger predators to take advantage of the abundance of food. A large window wouldn't do you much better than a small one, and you certainly wouldn't want enough to call the boat glass bottomed, but you could probably light up some small windows into the water just fine. On its own good acrylic is comparable to fiber glass in strength.
