World's Best Designers?

Who are they, but really?

Let's base our judgement on the current involvements in project, not old glory. Let's also base our judgements on the span of the work, originality, not just the same old theme being repeated on and on.

Who is giving new, fresh stuff to the market? Who can pilot the yard rather than being piloted? Who is involved in real, "getting built" stuff, who is known for more than one "successful" or just "big" project? Who is the real constant force at the moment?

Shall we exclude the number of the projects in the past, today we have some names that are actually up there but the mayority of the market hasn't really took them seriously. And then the old establishment...they defend themselves, too. Some of them with new stuff, too. So who of them surprises the market, who does really get the attention?

It's not easy when you think twice and get down to the facts.

To further muddy things, with the larger studios it's not always clear just who the talent is. I've seen some pleasing designs by Vripack, but don't know the names of the people.

You are more than right, and not only. Some of the worlds famous designers don't even go yachting, and some even declare themselves yacht haters, like Terence Disdale; he prefers river fishing.

But often we could see designers moving from the "big name" studios and pulling with them misteriously "the hand" of the studio. Like Disdale again-he's an interior designer, but he did exteriors as well...how? And then suddenly there is a "new" designer on the market designing with "Disdale" style? I tell you, it's not all gold that shines !!!

I have nothing against Farr, but his VO70 work would hardly be considered a highlight.

If we’re talking current projects with high impact over a broad spectrum, we should probably include Nuvolari & Lenard in this line-up for their design work in both custom and production lines of yachts.

Custom N&L yachts…

Palmer Johnson 120’, 123’ and soon to come 150’ ( and Mostro too!).
And then there’s Oceanco’s Y701 & Y702 series.
And of course CRN’s 43-46 meter range, like Magnifica / Saramour.

Production N&L yachts…

The new 59’ & 65’ Carver Marquis series for example.
