Curves...

Hi people.

As a young (ish) designer, i'm looking to get hold of a set of large french curves. I've tralled the net to no avail and wondered if any one out there knew of any sources i can get hold of some.

I made a search on Google for "French-curves" and found a lot of them. Always make sure to connect the words in a search and you get much closer to what you are looking for...

Thanks yeah, trouble is, its the shipping cost the UK. I cant find any UK stores with them, maybe i'm not looking in the right places. I simply can't afford $50 for six curves!

If you make a local search you can probably find them at a walking distance...

I already have a set of the normal french curves but they arent big enough. I used a large set, about 750mm long at my placement company last year, but they have no idea where they got them from.

Would it really cost $30 to post them to the UK? or is this just a massive charge they've put on top?

I think the real stuff you are looking for is called Copenhagen Ship Curves, they are bigger and normally only sold in sets of around 50, at a cost of more like USD 300!

I have also heard of computer files where you can cut them from, but have not found one.

When searching the net I found an old conversation on this subject where a guy replied to someone complaining over the price; Hey, you can use a dead snake to draw curves if you want to...

But are you really forced to use these kind of tools now when we use computers for everything from ideas to cutting?

Yeah, i know what you mean Lars, there is a lot of CAD design done these days, and i am a big fan of that, but i really do enjoy physically designing the whiole boat myself with a pencil and a really big piece of paper!

Yes Jon, I know the feeling when you have finished a drawing in A1 format, but I also know the feeling when you have to change something in it...

I took a picture of my drawing table where a computer screen have blocked all attempts of hand drawing for years, but actually I have not used that computer for years either. I do everything on my little laptop since I have a nicer view from another room...

Btw, I still look forward to see your designs!

I recently got a TFT monitor, lovely 19"

its HUGE! and takes up no space whatsoever, unlike my previous 17"crt!

Currently doing my final yr Boat Design project. A 37ft Med day boat, designed for maximum socialising and 'crusiing'. Still working on the design tho.

When i get chance, and dig the CD out, i'll put up a couple of images of a previous project, but everything is backed up on CD's for security, having suffered hard-drive crashes!

Jeez, that is very generous of you Brian! i would be very interested in the adjustable curve for sure. Can you have describe the others, or take pictures of them, not really sure what they are.

I would feel very bad about simply taking them off your hands, please if this is ok, let me give you something for them? I'm in the Uk, but my bro is in Buffalo so i could get him to send something in return?

Don't feel bad, I would like to help out a young designer. How about I send them to your brother in Buffalo and he can mail them over to you. That will save me a little postage and customs forms.

There is one flexible curve, a big french curve about 17 inches long, one french type curve about 14 inches long, a ships curve about 14 inches long, and a ships curve about 17 inches long.
