Resumes for Rookies?

What should one do to create a resume when you're just starting out?

Should you include your non-maritime corporate land based experience?

College and grad school degrees?

Is it wrong to over play your experience such as one design racing or vacation crusing?

Is less better than more when starting out?

Brevity is good; less is not, and don't BS. This is a business of reputations. If you BS'd me I'd know it the moment you stepped on deck and I'd probably kick you right back off.
Start off stating that you're looking to break into the field and this is why and this is my related experience. Then go to your business experience and of course your education.
The purpose of a resume is to introduce yourself and to give the potential employer a snapshot of you so you don't waste their time and they not waste yours.
Mention that you'll follow up shortly. Then call or pop by about a week or so later. If they say no accept it, but try to get your face in front of them from time to time (without stalking).
My first gig in Lauderdale (as a deckhand) an owner asked me how much I made in NY and said he'd call me. A couple of weeks later I saw him again and again he asked what $ I wanted. I told pay whatever you think I'm worth. I started work that night and a week later he was paying me more than I made in NY.
