Hi Folks,

My name is Dan Connolly. I've been operating large boats, up to 120ft (mainly sportfishers) in Southern California for around 15 years now. My girlfiend and I are considering relocating to Florida. Property values are just outrageous here. I have heard there is a lot of work for a captain through the grapevine, but haven't got any real specific information. I have a 100-ton master, STCW, Firefighting and Radar endorsement as well as a ton of operating, fishing ,logistics,mechanical and customer service experience.


Any ideas on where to start looking for a decent gig? I would prefer running a sportfishing yacht, yet I am open to anything. Also, what city or harbor would be the most attractive employment-wise for my situation?

Most jobs are found in Ft. Lauderdale, but Miami and West Palm Beach have plenty of jobs too.

Nas gave you some good info, but my sources say go to the brokers and shake a few hands, since they are the folks in the know.
BTW, property prices are high here too, but it's the taxes and home owners insurance that will get you (have you ever experienced a hurricane or three?). Do your homework before buying. Many of us live in FL and can help with that.
As for locations for sportfish, add Stuart, FL to the list. These are all east coast ports and areas, can't help much with the gulf areas.
