Superyacht Advice?

Hi,

I've been thinking for some time on what it would be like to work aboard a superyacht. I've got 10 years sea going experience behind me as a deck officer and I have cruise ship experience. I have also recently been sailing as 1st Officer aboard fast passenger ferries. I hold a UK STCW'95 Chief Officer II/2 cert of competency and was wondering what the likelihood would be for finding a deck officers job aboard a superyacht.

This is not a request for a job (at the moment) but merely a request for advice from those that are experienced in the industry and those that have made the transition from commercial shipping to yachts. What difficulties am I likely to face for instance? I was considering heading to Antibes in June. Will it be relatively straightforward to find a job around that time as I would ideally like to work from June till mid September in the med?

Many thanks to all that respond.

Ship to Yacht

Hello Neptune,

it will not be easy to get a job in the Yacht market without Yacht experience.
( i mean Yacht = 25m and up ) Okay we have many Super - Mega or Gigayachts also but my experience over the years shows that it is very very difficult to get a job on a mega ( mega = 50m and up ) if you never sailed on a smaller vessel.

Please also remember that we normally dont have on / off rotation on yachts.
Sometimes it could be possible to sail 6 month in the summer season and then
you will have the chance to come back for the next summer season.

Also remember that the season in med starts in april/mai and normally in june
all positions are filled.

You can contact me any time for informations.

I got the impression it wasn't going to be easy to start off. 6 month contracts or longer don't bother me at all but many thanks for the tips and for responding to my thread.
