Hi,

No offence as there was no joke -Wool is what sheep are for as well as meat for eating unless of course you live in Australia where Men are Men and Sheep are nervous and they have an additional use.

We're OK Norseman. We're only facing 4,173,460 angry e-mails. K1W1's gonna get 21,007,310 and they're close enough to visit.

Hi,

I might have to agree with that after seeing this Welsh filmclip.

They do say Wales is Woolyfull but this is not what you see everyday even there.

That was extremely cool. I'd actually seen a PBS special a while back featuring that older guy with that dog. Their the #1 team. He gives a little whistle the dog goes left, another-right, a third he runs up the hill the retrieve a tragler. Amazing. Thanks for sharing that.

I just received my 5th issue Masters license and got a bit of a surprise with it. Instead of issuing a license which has always been a bit unwieldly to protect when your working a lot of boats they've switched to a Merchant Mariner's Credential like the rest of the crew has been using for years. Much more convenient. Anyone know when this change came about?

I just renewed my license Feb 2009, and got the same old style of license on a sheet of paper. So what you're saying is they put your license on a credit card type plastic card?

No, it like a passport. It's like the regular book that a merchant seaman would carry.

Well, won't ya know it, the school cancelled the class and moved everybody to May instead..Should be a double class then but without me in it:
Sailing to the Bahamas instead, trying to get a few weeks in paradise before the 'cane season sets in.

With the grace period and all, I have plenty of time to renew the ticket and with the school on Andrews Ave here in Fort Lauderdale, 5 minuttes from meh house, should be easy enough to do later in the year.

So you did it on sea time only? No test, no refresher course?

Hmm, will have to quiz ya on the height of the mast-head light when I see ya here in Fort Lauderdale next week...

Yeah, 20 (actually 21) years of not knowing where my next pay check would come from or If it would come or if I'd live to collect it. There've been some tubs in that time and some grand ladies. All in all it's been interesting.

No Backlog

As the licenses are now issued by Homeland Security out of W.Va. there is no longer any backlog. I applied for my renewal in NY and got my new license within 2 weeks. Since there was a 6 month backlog the last time I renewed I again applied 6 months in advance. Result, my last license was active for 4 1/2 years instead of 5.
Norseman,
Does that Bahamas trip get you any closer to your sea time? If they cancelled the class in April, May may have even fewer sign-ups.

Renewal class for 100 ton ticket, Wednesday the 22 nd. July

Looks like I will be the only soul in class.

They have plenty of room if anybody wants to sign up with a short notice.

And this is pushed back from April. Doesn't look good for the school. That loophole to sea time could disappear. Won't you feel special though. Hopefully for you it's a SYT teaching you.
Good luck.

Also a loophole for not taking the test.

Yeah, I signed up for the course only if a SYT would be teaching, unfortunately his name is Ben...
