Commercial to yachting is it possible?

    Hello
    Can I have some advices about yachting jobs? Advantages, and disadvantages being a captain on the yacht (motor or sail)
    I am 43y unlimited master mariner with world wide experience on ro-ro and ferry ships. Last 15 years I was working on commercial ships and I would like to do some changes in my professional carrier. Any information advice will be welcome.

    If you have an STCW 95 Unlimited Masters Certificate of Competency issued by a country on the White List you should be able to get a Certificate of Equivalent Competency for most of the Flag States that yachts sail under.

    You would have to apply for one from the Flag State of the yacht you were going to be employed by.

    Other than that there is no real reason why you couldn't cross over to yachting although you might not just wander into a skippers job on a large yacht as your first job.

    You might also find at 43 some agencies will say you are too old to start yachting.

    At this stage of life, with 15 years in the commercial end of the business, I'd have to imagine that your best career prospects are there. Some may even think that you'd be too "rough".

    Thanks for all comments. With COC shut not be a problem I have couple of them including British & UAE one, I like this “rough” maybe it is a point. However I am presently working for quite long period on passenger ferry so if we are talking about proper relation between passengers and the master; I thing I may not have problem with it.
    I would be rather interested in if it is any specific master duties on this kind of the boat, how is the life on this crafts. How is usual relation between the owner and the master.

    That can be the $64,000 question.

    Some yachts run under the control of a management company and you as master may have no direct contact with the Owner, others might run their boats from their own offices and just have ISM/ISPS and other regulatory responsibilities outsourced to specialists.

    It means it is not much different from this what I have now (seems to be quite easy). I understood that rest of the crew is usually professionally trained not much rookies on board? How is with accommodation for the crew, who share the cabins?

    lots of variables... browse thru Triton Mag. website, there are many interesting articles on all these issues. Many answers and experiences are anecdotal so always take with a grain of salt but you'll find some good info in their News Search section, going back a few years
