It appears to be powered by the 928 S4 motor, as the intake and air filter assy, along with the cam covers all look identical to the S4. It could be the Cayenne motor, which is built along similar technology, but uses siamese cylinder walls to become more compact. Both use the silicon aluminum cylinder bores, which make them almost totally wear resistant. Great engines! I drive one to work every day.
The boat, however, is an enigma. It's not the first time Porsche strayed outside of what they do best. A designer thinks he/she can design anything, and they certainly can "style" anything. However, boat design is something that should not be "stylized" witout paying the dues for the engineering and functional design too. This boat is highly stylized, an in that regard will he a head turner, but I'd rather have a Donzi, Riva, or Fountain than a poseur any day. While this one will "look good", I seriously doubt if it will run with the Donzi, Fountain, or even a Riva when it comes time to stop looking pretty and get out in the salt and do the deed.

Porsche Design is a design studio owned and operated by the same Porsche Automobile Company who builds the great road cars. They style things like sun glasses and coffee makers (for Bosch), etc. The engineering arm of this company provides consulting for companies such as Volvo, back when Volvo ventured into the 4-valve cylinder head (back in the mid 80's when they first produced their 740 16v motor).
Interesting to see they're doing boats too. Also interesting to know that even though they sell their engineering talent to others, they have their Cayenne transmissions built in Japan by Aisian. They're good transmissions, I understand, except for the fact that nobody in the US or UK or anywhere else is able to work on them, and if you have a problem you have to exchange the unit for one sent in by the factory. Ouch!
To answer the gentleman's question, is this the same company as the auto manufacturer, the answer is "yes" (it is their design studio).

Hi Dogsharks and welcome to the Forums!
Most on this is already said earlier in this thread, but to make it clear. The Porsche Design Group is divided in three branches and the Porsche Design Studio in Zell am See is responsible for consumer products such as coffemakers and also this 27' boat. This was made already in 1985-87, based on a Magnum 27 hull, so I shouldn´t be afraid of challenging other boats of the same size.
The rendered boat in the beginning of this thread however, (Porsche design or not?), I would rather keep on the trailer...

There was a Porsche Kineo 50 built in England in the mid to late '80s. Aluminium hull and deck, hull design by Don Shead, deck design Dr. Strock, built by Comer Engineering as was. Design wise, a larger version of the 20 odd footer pictured above. Cant remember if it was twin or triple engined, but it was the venerable 928 V8 block. Dont know what happened to it, but it ran well.
I may edit this if I can find some info to back my memory up |

The one that Powerboat magazine tested this summer had a 550hp Ilmor Viper V10, ran just under 90mph and retailed for $340,000. Would make a great yacht tender, but I myself could not justify paying that much money for a 27'7" single engine boat.

Having synchronised my memory with documented fact, I can advise that the Kineo described above was in fact 40 feet, with FRP deck and twin 928 V8s. Started in '87, it never ran, as the project was put on hold. I've no idea what became of her, but when she left Comer Eng, she was almost complete. A Kineo 50 was fully drawn up and was to follow back to back, but again that project stalled. That hull lived on in another guise.

Out of curiosity, I checked e-bay for this boat was unable to locate it. Using the keyword "porsche", something interesting came up. Catman, you'll want to take a look at this. It's right up your alley, ahem... I mean tunnel. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Carls...4506 .c0.m245 |
