Hello all!! I am new to this Forum and thought I would just step right in! I have experiance with smaller boats/yachts. A friend and myself are considering purchasing a larger yacht and chartering it on the East Coast of the U.S.

One thing that we are concerned about is keeping it in "ship shape"!
Does anyone have some estimates on the upkeep on a yacht in the 80' and 100' range? Rather than specify our budget (which is not that tight) I would like to hear what the statistics are.

At the past FLIBS I was amazed by the Calixas 105 when I toured it. I also was deeply impressed with the Sunseeker range. The 105 yacht, and the 82 Predator. Finally the Pershing's. The 90' was spectacular!!!

Any comments/opinions are all welcome!!

P.S. I tried to post in the right section. I apologize if this is not the right place. Just learning the ropes!!

I hope "no limit" was what your accountant replied when you asked how much you had available for this project!

The old standard of about 10 percent of the value of the boat won't be too far off as a starting point. I am sure you will get a wide range of figures.

Thank you for your input. Ten percent is a good figure. I think I have heard that before. Right now this idea is just being formed, but in due time we will get it going!!! Go big or not at all right?! Thank you again!

10 % of which value, actual cost of vessel, replacement, new ??? If the vessel in question is a 10 year old beaten up clunker then that is a different 10% to a brand spanking new 10%. The former will in actuality is more like 20% of the true value. Simple as it may seem I have seen several owner fall into this trap, it makes for a miserable experiance for everyone involved.

Garry Hartshorn (and others!): So what do you suggest? Brand new/slightly used? and what is your say on the upkeep? Just trying to get a feel for things. Sorry if these are inadequate questions.
