Zinc Anodes

Someone could explain me how the zinc anodes (on the rudders, hull and bulbous bow of Apoise and Amevě) works?

Some photos of Apoise and of the new Amevě:

Anodes are used on the bottom sides of boats to help preserve the underwater hull and all the other metal parts from corrosion. The anodes often corrode at a faster rate than the metal itself used as the hull or screws or screw shafts, rudders, couplings and so on. This is why they are often called sacrificial anodes because they litterally sacrifice themselves for the sake of perserving the underwater hull and the other metal parts.
