Man Engine CR900 temperature issue

    Yesterday while trolling the starboard engine temp did not come up like the port engine. Only when I would start running the temp on starboard engine would come up to 190 otherwise the starboard engine was 160 or somewhere there about when port engine was 190.
    Is this a thermostat issue? Since the temp on the sb was lower I was not overly concerned but don't understand why it is happening.

    Could be a gauge or sender issue. Could be a thermostat issue. Could be a ....

    You'll have to do a little trouble shooting to track it down.

    Capt Bill,
    I realize that more checking is needed although I was looking for more specific answers.
    What sensor would be providing the temperature?
    Is there a way to check the thermostat without taking apart?
    Could a cap be causing the problem? Anything to look for on cap?

    Like most engines it was fine running over here to the Bahamas and next time I cranked it this was the result.

    I'd start with using a IR temp gun to read the actual temps at various point on the engine and see what that gets you.

    What type of gauges do you have? If the old school dial type, did you try hitting the temp gauge with you hand to see if it would jump up? :)

    Too many odd things happened after arriving in the Bahamas.


    Did your boat get hit by lightening after arriving in the Bahamas?


    You cannot see if on the hook - electrical system problems.


    Cannot poop - head will not flush (pump = electric).


    One engine running cooler than the other (sending unit = electric).


    Guess it's time for another boat. :D

    160F at idle trolling all day can be normal on a mechanical diesel. That being said, get an infra-red temperature gun and start reading temperatures. Check the temps before and after each thermostat if you can, that should tell you if one is stuck open or not...... It can also tell you if your gauge or sender is reading falsely as well.

    Just the info I was looking for. Next time away from GT Club marina will check with heatgun on both sides of thermostat.
