A.C. filters for my CruiseAirs?

What's the proper care for my original eqipment 1978 vintage 16,000 btu cruisair units? They don't have filters on them. Should they and if so what kind? Also how should I clean the coils?

Clean the coils with a powerful shop-vac. I saw a new filter media recently at a show that goes over the coils where there would normally be wire mesh, it looked like good stuff, I will try to find more about it and post it here when I do.
