What is this???

These two units are in the electronics closet on my sailboat. At one time, they may have been used for electronic noise suppression, but now I have no idea if they are needed. Can anyone confirm their function??? Thanks.

Remove one and read the label.

^that^
It looks like a power inverter possible, but a couple of screws and a look on the back will tell you everything you need to know.

What mfg of boat? What / where do wires go to and from? They don't appear to be connected now? (or at least from the limited view in your image posted.)

Single wire in with a 12v + & -? An alarm possibly? Is that a peizo alarm on the top of each?

It is a power transistor and that points toward the item being a power supply or regulator of some sort.

All good ideas - thanks. I'll try to take a closer look at the units this weekend, as my desire is to remove them if no longer needed. Boat is a Swan 57 sloop. Thanks again.

The units have labels which read something like this:
Blaupunkt
Elektronischar
Sbgunugstailer

If I Google that last word, it suggests "Spannungsteiler" which turns out to be some sort of voltage divider.

I also discovered that if I pull off the ground wire from the units, the (new) VHF radio will not power on so I assume these units are in the electrical return path for some reason.

Think this is going to wind up being another electrical mystery to me.

Thanks.

Could they have been amps for an old stereo system?

Do you have a 24V boat? Or a 12V boat with a 24V radio?

She is a 24v boat, with a couple or 12v circuits for electronics. I believe this is a 12v circuit as the old Sailor VHF radio had it own, dedicated, 24v to 12v converter.

There you go then. Disconnect them and all the 12V electronics will probably go dark.
