2005 Mercury 250XXL Verado - Lower Unit

    Just purchased a BW 32 Outrage with 250 Verado's and was running at cruise the other day in flat water. Heard a popping and high rev sound. Looked at the Port Engine and there was oil floating up to the surface - figured that can't be good. Pulled in on one engine, looked at the motor from the dock and found a 3" diameter hole on the inside of the motor. Could see clear into the housing and see the gears, etc.

    Lower units were serviced and checked regularly, survey's came up with nothing. I have attached a picture for review. Any thoughts other than the obvious of what could have been the cause?

    Post this over at ScreamAndFly. Lots of guys on that forum that have served as consumer guinni pigs for modified Mercs O/B's. When the big-V was intro'd, the boys from Fond du Lac bragged about the years of testing that went into their not-so-naturally aspirated inline. In the end, it didn't last much longer than any other black motor.

    Thanks Carl. I have posted there. Ordered the new lower unit last week and will be installing it monday. Big fishing trip planned. Boat needs to be perfect.

    Looks like inside out damage. Further forward and it would be likely caused by freezing. My claims guide mentions that freeze damage is near the nose cone too far forward to have been caused by pushing a gear out so maybe a gear problem is the source of your trouble. When it is torn down you will know more upon examination of the bits and pieces. Hard to tell just by looking at the outside...
