AC Fan Needs Replacing 18000 BTU?

    My boat has a split dometic marine air system. One of the ac fans located on the flybridge (2-fans in one box) quit working. Got a price of $1k to replace one and if replace both then approx $1500. Doesn't seem like a hard job is this price about right.

    No way to tell without more information.

    What is the quote for the part?

    What is the quote for labor?

    How hard is the unit to get at?

    If it's hard to get at then replacing both may not be a bad idea. Even though fans seem to last a very long time.

    $460 for each fan x 2 = $920 the balance labor.
    Very easy to get to on flybridge.

    I'm guessing somewhere in the neighborhood of $90 - $95/hour for labor?

    If so, quote seems high if the unit is really very easy to get at. Are they tacking on any travel time?

    Have you gotten a second quote?

    If it's easy to get at, can you do it yourself?

    Where is the boat located?

    Possibly an hr travel time. I could do it myself if I could get the parts. The boat is located in New Smyrna Beach, Fl.

    It's a pretty straight foward swap out. The unit will have a tag on it with the serial number and model number. Dometic is located in Pompano Beach, FL. You could call them and get the parts and have them shipped to you, or they could locate a dealer in your area. Dometic forces all dealers to charge a certain price for each part. So if the blower motor is $460 each from that guy, they should be from every other dometic dealer also.

    As J said. I can give you the name and number of the AC guy I use in Ft. Lauderdale if you want? He should be able get you the part.

    If your referring to the fan motor as the problem, I would suggest just removing the fan and motor yourself. Take it to any HVAC wholesale supply in the area and they should be able to match it for much less than the numbers I see here. These motors are pretty generic in nature so even if they don't have the exact match they can usually find something that works right on the spot otherwise they order and you wait a day. I have similar systems on my Viking and in my wine cellar and have had to change both,
