I've had news this month that Volvo are announcing a new D3 this Fall.

The media stuff says it is a whole new block (note, still 5 cylinder), new head and electronic extras but still on the new-ish DPS/A drive.

The new top-end model is the 220 HP, which should be fun.

As I get more info I will post it.

Based on my experience with the D3/190 I would say under 30 foot in single application. Boats of 1500 - 2000 kg. Above this you should have a twin installation or a single D4 engine in a 30-footer.

You are right ofcourse.........I meant twin D3 engines in boats in the 30 foot range.

We've repowered loads of 25/29 footers with D3s from Gas engines and have had great success. Fuel bills have gone down while performance has gained.

I'm with AMG as to stepping up to a D4 at about a 30 footer, a single D4 can out perform a pair of Gas engines in the right boat. Just supercharge it and go.

The new D3 delivery has been delayed until early 2010

Some info on this engine:

The commonality with current generation D3 is in the name and the five-cylinder configuration only. The result of the development work is a World Class Performing marine engine with very low emissions.

The base for the New D3 is a newly developed engine fulfilling the Euro V on-road legislation. For Marine use, the engine is prepared to meet the 2012 US EPA Tier 3 emission requirement.

The range will be extended compared to the existing D3-range:
Ø The D3-220 @ 4000 rpm will extend the D3 range and gives an outstanding performance and hp/weight ratio. The engine will, for most applications, be able to replace the D4-225 engine with a significant weight saving as result.

Ø The D3-110 and the new D3-150 @ 3000 rpm will be the most modern and comfortable engine alternative in the market for displacement boats and Sailing Yachts.

110hp @ 3000 rpm with HS25 and HS63IV
150hp @ 3000 rpm with HS45 and HS63IV
170, 200, 220hp @ 4000 rpm with HS45 and HS63IV

Note: EVC Low speed is available as an option for HS25, HS45 & HS63IV. Reduces outgoing rpm up to 90%.

I would take a D2 75hp over a D3 anyday, far more robust and simple motor and available on a saildrive. Useing VDS3 oil the D2 can go 500 hours (on VDS2, normal oil, 250hrs is recommended) between oil changes and still be in warranty, a true long range motor.

Volvo only dropped the unvailing of the new engine a few weeks ago to the suprise of most importers and dealers.
