Can't plane out, bottom problem?

    Hi -

    I have a 2004 SeaRay 320, went out this weekend and couldn't get the boat to plane out. At half-throttle both engines were running at 32k rmp, but no matter how much more I gave it the rpm's of BOTH did not increase. I was definately on the edge of being able to plane but just couldn't tip over..We ended up taking them down to 22k and putting to sailors haven for the weekend anyway.

    Some extra info: I'd had an accident and broke several ribs a month ago, so the boat had just sat there for about 5 weeks without any running. Couuld I have enough growth for this to happen? I also noticed that after a an hours running at slow speeds the c02 alarm went on in the cabin....I assume that's from putting around for so long?

    One of the nice guy's there put his hand under the boat and said he felt growth and that was most likely my issue. Just wondering if you guy's agree?

    What do the throttles provide to both engines?


    What are your engines not receiving?

    I am assuming you are running gas engines in this vessel and I also assume that they are not rated to produce anything worthwhile at 32,000 ( 32k) rpm


    How often do you normally run the boat and or clean the bottom? A lot can grown in 5 weeks in the right conditions.


    Are you sure it was C02 - Carbon Dioxide the same stuff found in your Fire Extinguisher and not it's deadlier relation CO - Carbon Monoxide a product of a Gas engines exhaust?

    If there is enough growth on the bottom and under water gear it could certainly slow your performance and ability to reach planing speed.

    I did feel growth when I reached under the rear of the boat and touched the bottom.

    Do both engines draw from the same tank?

    Anyone check or change fuel filter(s) recently?


    How about the flame arrestors (air filters)?

    Two seperate tanks. The end of last season was the last time they were changed.

    I would have just changed out the fuel filters while i was at Sailors Haven (have two on board), but I was talked out of it as they need to be primed...

    Do you mean will the engines turn faster then 3,200 with wide open throttle? If so, yes. In neutral they rev as they normally will.

    No, the engines do not have that type of large fuel seperator.

    Start with th bottom and most importantly the running gear. When did you last get th bottom scrubbed? Amazing what a few barnacles on th wheels will do

    I will have the bottom cleaned when I pull her next week for transport to the North Shore. Moving from Lindenhurst NY to Huntington NY. Anyone know a good company to take a 32 footer across the Island?

    The performance is one issue. I would have the bottom cleaned and then instantly run it to see if the problem has changed.

    The CO2 alarm is a seperate issue and extremely important to have checked/fixed. This is usually from exhaust gasses leaking from the exhaust.

    If y were running off plane but above hull speed you were probably burning a lot more fuel for very little extra speed which means more emissions. A slow speed, the station wagon effect could result in co being sucked in, especially with no wind or light tail wind. In these conditions, you may need to open a forward hatch or close the cabin door.

    I was hoping that was the cause of it. I'll get the bottom cleaned up and see if the carbon Monoxide issue repeats itself.

    Anyone have any idea how much fuel i'd burn going from Lindenhurst to ...assuming I go west and not around the Island!

    First year with this boat, so i'm taking it gently....

    Should be able to do the trip with full fuel tanks, with some left.
