Build Update: Palmer Johnson 170' Sport

Build Update; Palmer Johnson 170' Sport

Construction continues in the Palmer Johnson’s U.K. facility, opened in Hampshire in 2008, on the flagship of Palmer Johnson’s sport yacht series, designed by the Italian firm of Nuvolari & Lenard. The construction of the first 170’ Sport Yacht began in September of 2008, and delivery is expected a few months from now, in the spring of 2010.

Before construction began, the 170 was built digitally in a three-dimensional model. Modular construction ensures that all sections of the yacht progress concurrently, ensuring a quicker delivery time. PJ’s modern facilities in the U.K. include a 47,000 sq.-foot fabrication facility, an advanced metal-cutting bay, sophisticated material handling equipment and a floating dry dock for controlled vessel launches.

The facility allows for the construction of yachts up to 328’ in length. As the photo of the completed hull and superstructure clearly shows, this new vessel is built in PJ’s favorite material, welded aluminum. The yacht features a nearly vertical bow, designed for performance, sea-keeping abilities and a “dry” ride.

Although distinct from the builder’s smaller models, the PJ 170 shares the sophistication of its predecessors, such as sweeping staircases rising from a large swim platform to a spacious cockpit area. The emphasis is on huge open spaces to maximize the owner’s comfort, a scheme which has allowed the inclusion of a foredeck swimming pool and lounge area.

Although the builder remains guarded on the details, it promises that this new flagship model will introduce breakthrough engineering elements and design features unique to the brand. Among available technology is MTU’s new Bluevision, a system designed to optimize interfaces between propulsion and electronic systems, and equipped with a color monitor for easier overview of the vessel’s propulsion plant.

The PJ Sport Yacht era began in 2004 with the 120’, Cover Drive. The “family” has continued to grow with the 135 and 150 models, all developed in conjunction with Nuvolari & Lenard. All yachts in the sport series have a European feel and modern Italian design, but each is truly unique, with various paint schemes and a broad choice of interior finishes. The 170’ flagship attests to Palmer Johnson’s evolution in design and engineering in a few short years.
