Review: Outer Reef 73' Pilothouse

Review Tools Rating: Thread Rating: 27 votes, 4.85 average.
As expected on a ship that is built to challenge the oceans’ far away places with strange sounding names, OR-73’s helm is as professional as any naval adventurer would chose. Facing a beam-wide aggregation of ½” tempered glass windows, the pilot is presented with outstanding visibility, control, and course latitude. Full instrumentation is laid out in well-lighted displays, illuminated not only internally but also with overhead starlights. The captain’s single Stidd adjustable helm chair, model 500 XL with Ultraleather upholstery, sits solidly on its chrome pedestal and base, facing a teak-adorned destroyer wheel. The base cabinetry is fitted for full size charts and other indispensable stored items. Just aft of the captain’s navigation nerve center, a deeply upholstered couch and table accommodate bystanders and provide for congenial conversation. And finally, watertight entrance doors flank both sides of the pilothouse. A good thing given the weather when this picture was taken!
Almost as elegant as the master, the forward stateroom features a fore and aft queen size berth, enclosed with muted teak step-ups on each side, and copious storage cabinets. Drawers are finished Formica; hanging lockers are cedar lined and open air ventilation is provided via a deck access hatch above the berth.
With it's own porthole for ventilation, the guest head has a single white sink ensconced with a decorative granite countertop. There is plentiful storage space for towels and linens, and a large vanity mirror, set against the light teak veneer wall coverings. In every sector of the yacht, heads favor teak and holly soles.
On the lower deck, down a wide, semi-circular staircase carved in light teak, with banisters and risers in various shades of teak as well, lies the master stateroom. Quite spacious, with its walk-around king size berth, its ecru ceiling is contrasted against wood veneer walls and bureaus. Cedar hanging lockers with automatic lighting and prominent shaped moldings add to the luxurious presentation, all enhanced by a curved ceiling fixture above the headboard with recessed ropelights. Offering Cantalupi Luisella reading lights – as do each of the lodgings– it is a room that presents a welcome ambience with glows eminating from around the pedestal of the berth. Not shown in this picture is a generous sized owner's desk, that spans the starboard side of the suite.
Here too, in the master head, elegance is presented in spare good taste, as muted teak veneer wall covering is offset by a strong statement of sculptured granite on the countertop, and stark white Kohler double sinks, his and hers, that jettison outward from the counter. A room-width mirror reflects the showers off-white wall panels with chrome Grohe Europlus faucets and a Relaxa Plus Pulsator hand shower, with added 24” shower bar.
At the stern is a comfortable third stateroom. Well suited for crew or additional guests, it follows the same understated, decorative theme as the larger accommodations. Outfitted with right-angled double berths, the stateroom also offers a built-in desk, shelving and a private porthole. Multiple drawers and lockers consume any un-used space, while a separate head/vanity and shower, also sporting Grohe Europlus fixtures is located opposite of this room.
Outer Reef 73' - Engine Room

The purposefully organized engine room is lined by stainless safety rails and protected by two watertight bulkheads, as well as watertight aluminum doors with sight windows. Edura coin-dot flooring provides a safe, non-slip, easily cleaned surface for walk-around maintenance of the twin Caterpillar 3406E, 800 BHP diesel engines and ZF transmissions. Course keeping is via Hynautic power steering systems in dual stations.

Other attractive and practical features of the performance complex include Glendinning engine controls for three stations: pilothouse, flybridge, and aft deck for intricate docking maneuvers. This is all connected to stainless steel prop shafts and four-blade Nibral propellers, with Tides packless shafts. Drive systems utilize stainless steel struts with bearings, plus stainless steel rudders with bearings.
Also in the engine room are components of the ABT hydraulic bow thruster, stern thruster and stabilizers. Other components include the 230 VAC Cruise-Air chilled water A/C plan, and Fireboy Fire Supression system with engine and generator auto shutdown feature. A closer inspection of these systems reveals some interesting details, such as labels for every wire and hoses with easily traced plumbing layouts.
T-bolt hose clamps (not worm gear) are used for every fitting and then doubled-up for an added measure of security. There's often more than meets the eye in pictures. For example, the great lengths a builder goes through to reduce noise and vibration. Outer Reef addresses this by soft mounting the engines and generator. To further enhance sound supression, the engine room is insulated with multiple layers of lead foam and an underwater exhaust exit to the far aft of the hull helps keep things quiet outdoors.
The Outer Reef 73 is built in compliance with the U.S. Coast Guard Safety Package. This ocean-going vessel is perfect for the single-hand mariner or competent couple who dream of self reliant, self directing adventure on the sea. Engineered with redundancy and durability in mind, Outer Reef’s 73’ is the perfect live-aboard cruiser that will be no worse-for-wear in the years to follow.

For the simple autonomy of independence in a broad range of cruising experience, anywhere the seas may take you, look to the Outer Reef 73...

...it's a round-trip ticket with a guaranteed return.
