Nordhavn 56 Motorsailer

The popular trawler yacht builder, Nordhavn has decided to build a combination trawler. What is meant by this is that the N56 will be an endurance vessel with the capability to motor and sail when needed. This is versatility at its best and is why the N56 motor sailor will be examined.

At 56 feet long, the N56 is right in the middle of Nordhavn’s construction sizes. The sailor-trawler is currently under construction and well underway in this process. What makes this particular vessel very unique is its ability to sail and motor. The special part is that even at 56 feet this yacht will have an enormous range. To be exact, she will have a range of 3,000+ NM under engine power alone. With the wind, the possibilities are endless, so long as the wind is abundant.

She will have a fuel capacity of slightly less than 750 gallons but the efficiency of the engine allows for this extended range at slower speeds. Trawlers are not built to be speedsters but for endurance and comfort in all areas and explains the phenomenal range they have.

The engine power is to be provided by means of a Lugger 1066 T engine. This proven engine will be connected to a shaft to drive a 4 bladed 36 inch propeller. The Hundested propeller will be a controllable pitch type and will also have the ability to be feathered. This ability produces less drag, if the captain wants to convert the vessel to sail mode.

Without the sailing rig, the N56 resembles a single acting trawler. Her superstructure is placed aft of the amidships position but this will not compromise the navigation of the vessel. There is to be large near 360 degree windows for the helm station. These windows stretch aft wards and allow views for those in the saloon. The saloon is not the largest but it will have comfortable seating. On the port side of the helm there is a stair way to take you below.

Once below, the galley and accommodation will be evident. The galley is to be spacious for the size of the vessel. It will offer the expected amenities and functionalities of any yacht. Ample cabinet storage, granite counter space, cook top, and refrigerators with freezer are listed. Aft of this region is the full beam master room. The master will come complete with a large bed, bath and toilet and plenty of storage. There appears to be a VIP type room in the bow and features similar amenities.

Here are some statistics on the Nordhavn 56 motor-sailor:

LOA: 57’ (incl. swim step)
LWL: 52’ 06”
Beam: 16’ 07”
Draft – full load:6’
Displacement – full load: 70,410 lbs.
Water capacity: 250 gallons
Fuel Capacity: 740 gallons
Range under power alone: 3,000+ nautical miles

Does anybody have any ideas why the keel has the cutout right in front of the prop? The preliminary drawings for the Nordhavn 50 motorsailer did not have this and most other motorsailers I have seen have a keel that is straight back to the rudder.

This is just to make here easier to turn around, in a port or when tacking. I have almost the same on my motorsailer.
