Moonen Shipyards—builders of a full line of displacement, semi-displacement, and Explorer yachts up to 124 feet—has contracted to build the second in its brand-new series of 97-foot displacement cruisers. The Moonen 97 has an exterior shaped by René van der Velden with naval architecture by Diana Yacht Design. The first Moonen 97, sold earlier this year, is already under construction for delivery in early 2008.
The Moonen 97, with steel hull and aluminium superstructure, is an extended version—with a slightly lower profile-of the Moonen 96 Clementine, launched in spring 2005. The yacht has an overall length of about 30 metres and a beam of about 7 metres.
Instead of a raised pilothouse and sundeck, the Moonen 97 has a large flying bridge with whirlpool bath. Otherwise it has the most desirable features of the very popular Moonen 84—principally the spacious four-stateroom layout. But Moonen has made good use of the greater volume by enlarging the staterooms, increasing the crew area, adding stowage for long-distance cruising, and augmenting fuel capacity for transatlantic range.
The second yacht is set for delivery in mid-2008. Both Moonen 97s are being built to Lloyd’s Register Classification and MCA certification.
