Will be in San Francisco in late September for a week, and am looking to bareboat charter some type of express cruiser in the 35' to 50' range for a week. Ideally a boat like an Eastbay would be perfect, but am open to other makes as long as the boat is in good condition, and can cruise in the mid 20 knot range.

Also looking for suggestions for cool stuff to see and do while we are there...

I can't help you much with the boat charter, unless you are looking for a 500' training ship...but as far as fun stuff to do:

Alcatraz Island (tickets sell out a few weeks in advance)
Giants will be in town
Point Reyes national seashore (I am going camping there this weekend, absolutely beautiful)
Napa and surrounding wine country, I suggest the Rutherford grill for dinner
SS Jeremiah O'Brien and the USS Pampanito are docked at Pier 45, fun little tour

Just a few ideas, if you tell me more what you are looking for I might be able to help you out some more. Other than that, if you are cruising outside the gate beware of the potato patch!

There is also Angel Island.

Monterey Bay is not too far down the coast.

Water is very cold around here all the time and the sea is rough outside the GG Bridge.

I second Point Reyes. Nice little town. It has fresh oysters.

There is the very boring silly.con valley, in case you want to visit Google and Apple.

Yes, nice town, here's some personal observations.
DON'T DRIVE, it cost me a tank of gas just to find a parking spot. Use Taxis and the Bart system.
Take the Bart to Berkley and check out the views from the tower.
Definitely go to Monterey and see the Aquarium, it must be World's Best.

Driving is not that bad. The key is not to look for street parking, it probably costs less to pull into a garage. Beware, one garage may charge you $5 for 20 minutes and the one across the street may cost only $1.5 for a whole hour.

The cable car is a must! If you are a chocolate lover or you are traveling with one the Ghirardelli factory is right next to fishermans wharf. You may be interested in Lombard street as well.

I am finding it very hard to find a boat we could rent for the week to watch sailboat racing in San Francisco Bay.

Anyone who knows of a private boat, in the 30 foot to 60 foot range, whose owner wouldnt mind a nice check for a week of charter use, please ask them to get ahold of me!

That nice check could cost him his boat and more if he's not insured for charter. Check with the marinas and brokers in that area for someone. There are also a couple of charter publications that may have some listings.

You definitely have to go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
And right across the Aquarium is First Awakenings, where they serve the BEST BREAKFAST in Monterey.

It's funny, several people I have talked with have said the same thing mentioned earlier, that insurance would be an issue for this bareboat charter I am trying to arrange.

I talked to an insurance broker, who said that it could be taken care of and would not be an issue.

Still casting my net far and wide to find a good boat for watching sailboat races in the bay, but not having much luck
