Yachts spotted in Texas

I was down in Clear Lake, TX (on Galveston Bay) Friday and snapped these pics of some Texas yachts. Proof that we actually have some over here!

For those interested, pics taken with a Nikon D200 and the Nikkor 18-200 VR lens. A great combination.

Thanks for the clarification and further info.. Memory was a little fuzzy at 0200. Heard a Galveston lawyer (fellow Aggie) bought her. She will be berthed in Galveston at Fisherman's Wharf.. Was she the yacht on the Galveston web cam the other day? My pic was taken at the Houston In Water Boat Show. The Owner even had a banner up on the dock side of the yacht with his firm's website address!

Good to see some Texans on the board!

I think I read that the captain of Mas Grande is Erich Englebrecht, my old Seaschool instuctor.

Jim,

Thanks for your post. I teach at Texas Maritime and will be trying to arrange a tour of the yacht for a few cadets in my class this semester.

I am working to build some interest in the yacht industry as an option to the cadets sailing on merchant vessels.

Captain Chris,

I am not the Captain... Just posted the pics and will let you know if I meet the new Captain.

With the industry shortage of crew, I am hoping to get some interest going with Texas A&M Maritime cadets..

Great to see, something that I find interesting here in Texas is the lack of larger yachts. There seems to be the money but interesting how people just don't spend it on yachts???
I understand that there is an issue with port authorities and foreign flagged vessels??? Do you have any further light on this?

Capt Chris,

There is alot of money in Texas, especially with the run up in oil prices over the last couple of years. Here in Houston, we even saw a new Rolls Royce/Bentley dealership open up a few years ago and in the last 12 months a Lamborghini dealership popped up.

My guess is that wealthy Texans are buying yachts, but due to the private nature of the owners we do not notice them and they don't typically bring their yachts back to Texas. The Texas coast is certainly not a hot cruising destination.

Regarding the port authorities and foreign flagged vessels, I am not aware of any specific problems. Do you have a particular example of an issue?

I was lead to believe that vessels over 50t needed a pilot to enter port.

I'm not sure how true this is?

I guess the medical center in Houston is bring some money to Texas to?
I was speaking to a guy last night who may be interested in buying a yacht, an MD.

recent pics

Just to confirm some of the above posts. Erich was the captain on 'El Grande' the last boat owned by the owner of 'Mas Grande' Is no longer the captain. He is now running Fanatasea Yacht Cruises on Clear lake.

El Grande was a 1996 Azimut 100 Jumbo

I am led to believe that hightide II was coming to Texas when her knew owner passed away. Apparently the yacht is now in the hands of the family.

Thought i'd also post a pic i took of Mas Grande this weekend.

Thanks for the heads-up! I'll have to catch Erich, his boat is docked at it's new pier in South Shore Harbour just a few hundred feet from my boat.
