90 meter Rainbow should be launched any time now at Lurssen. Has anyone seen her design yet? She designed by Tim Heywood, and is rumoured to be very spectacular..

Beauty is only skin deep! Air is easily one of the most attractive yachts ever built... not because of its looks, but what's inside.
Techmati... you're the BEST! While I'm waiting for images to arrive from Lurssen for a feature review.... you beat 'em.
I spoke with Lurssen last week. They offered pics of Northern Star because they still haven't got a photographer for Air yet. Techmati... this is your chance! |

i do like Tim Heywood's work in general. what about AIR then? well the hull is very nice. i do like the bulwark from the bow which makes the yacht 3d when viewed from the side, it could have been another boring horizontal line. i dont see any hull windows which would make me think "copy" or they are "recycling that again"..... they are Pelorus style though but that is a good thing. The proportions of the yacht are great. the grey of the hull is a nice dark colour which i like to see in cars. the curve of the bridge wing is a nice touch.
the funnels are original and not offensive. There are no mickey mouse ears of satellite comms like octopus, they are quite small and inoffensive. the bow mast is also not ugly like some of the large yachts. the helicopter is nice also and colour coordinated.
did anybody spot any ugly lifeboats? non solas class i guess......
so what dont i like. well I dont like the lines of the accommodation, it is like they stuck an apartment block on the hull. however like Carl suggested, function was probably more important to the owner than the look of the design.
Environmentally friendly, it is a paradox but a beautiful contribution to yacht history and it is hoped more owners take this into account in the future.

It's funny you say that, because the first time I saw a photgraph of Air my brain immediately clicked to think "a expedition/working version of Pelorus".

@kevin, lol i forgot Pelorus is also a Heywood design, no wonder the similarities. I saw AIR her again from the flyover on the way home. from above and from a distance the overall design did work and was not ugly. perhaps ahead of her time? i wish to see Pelorus live in order to compare.
@Carl thanks for the nice comments.
