Lürssen Yacht - Falco built 1988

Lürssen Falco built 1988

This was my first glimpse of Ontario (the boat on the left) since her accident at Rhodos. After the accident she got a refit at HDW where the awning on the sundeck was created. Originally she was launched as Falco by Lurssen in 1988.

First can I correct you on a few details regarding the motor yacht Ontario.

The yacht was originally built as M.Y. Falco.

Construction started in 1991 and was completed in May 1992.
After delivery of the yacht we took her to Sweden for her shake down cruise and then returned to Fr Lurssen Werft in Early July to carry out guarantee work.

We then took Falco down to the Mediterranean and our first port of call apart from refuelling in Gibraltar was Ibiza.
After cruise around Ibiza and Mallorca we when to the south of France and were based in Golf Juan

Falco was sold in 1993 and was renamed Maarlana.

The Awning structure on the top deck was fitted before the grounding incident near Rhodes not at HDW.

The original yacht Falco was also built by Lurssen Werft in 1988 and was sold in 1992
(completely different yacht).

Regards,

Beau.

As far as I can see, the boat on the pictures is the original Falco / Maalana / Ontario from 1988...?

There were two yachts both owned by the same Owner.
The one in the picture is the second one, which was built in 1992.
I was the Build Engineer who oversaw her construction.

Regards,

Beau.

Wow, thanks for the insight, I did not know that they were two. Thought it was just Ontario.

OK, it was a little confusing with the years since the second Falco is said to be from 1988 in "The Superyachts" book. Maybe they mixed it up as well, since if I recall the first Falco was also by Gilgenast and Lürssen. But just 95´or so?

The company which oversaw the design of both Falco yachts was a firm called MPS Design which was owned by Gilgenast and was based in Lemwerder.
I believe that after we completed the construction of the second Falco, MPS ceased operating.
Gilgenast died after suffering from cancer in the summer of 91 while the hull was still under construction.

The first yacht was renamed as the name was transferred over to the second yacht.
I can't remember what she was called after, but I remember that it was sold in the spring of 92.

The original yacht was smaller and of a more of a semi displacement design.
From memory the hull was built of aluminium.
It was based normally based in Port Galice in Juan Les Pins.
