  1. Lazzara 116' Raised Pilothouse Motoryacht
Extending the Lineage and Opening New Vistas…

    by Capt. Chuck Gnaegy

Dramatic horizons continue to rise at Lazzara, launching at ever-new levels to its spectacular line of
luxury motoryachts. The Tampa, Florida builder focuses on fresh ideas, rakish designs,
rallying on speed and comfort in its burgeoning lineage.

Each decade since its start-up (with cruising sailboats in the 1970s; many of those still navigating the planet’s oceans) Lazzara has progressed in step with the world economy, as its growing list of clients demand more size, more class, more surprises in the world yachting community. Lazzara meets each new opportunity with creativity in style and capability. Though it continues to be a production yacht builder, new targets sport individual characteristics which translate into customization.

The new 116' for example, is its sleekest yet. While it definitely records a striking family resemblance to previous models, the bold new design also offers available options by which owners can write their own ticket. For this particular build and the subject of this review, the owner wanted a boat specifically configured to allow access for disabled guests, opening up the world of yachting to those previously limited by accessibility. The result is a yacht that opens new vistas for guests on wheels and will certainly become an important addition to the charter yacht community.
  2. With its signature teardrop windows lengthened into even more exhilarating arrows, the yacht seems poised in profile to soar after some airy, invisible target. Although the L-116' looks fast sitting still, it delivers underway with a cruise of 24 knots, reaching maximum velocity at 27 knots. The blacked-out, arrow-shaped windows contrasting against the stark white hull make this yacht a statement in style, one to be noticed and zealously appreciated in any harbor. For Lazzara, the L-116; a hand-laid, unidirectional fiberglass, vacuum bagged boat – becomes the logical successor to its previous series which began at 84’, then a 106’, followed by a 110’. Although last year’s 75’ LSX was a quick side-step anomaly, it produced new ideas that were swiftly incorporated into Lazzara’s fold.
  3. On the flybridge, buyer options include a choice of open or enclosed space. The area is large; also a trait characteristic of Lazzara’s design planning. It hosts twin couches and cocktail tables, plus a bar with stools, refrigerator and outdoor grill, all nestled under the hard top. Forward, the upper helm is fully equipped, boasting a Stidd Captain’s adjustable seat, plus a twin, and two auxiliary chairs, behind a stainless steel-framed windscreen. Twin wide, curving guest lounges face serving tables. The flybridge is topped off with a TracVision nav-bulb, antennas and twin radar sweeps.
  4. Of course the open aft deck flaunts a generous, round Jacuzzi hot tub. In this photo, the bar with stools, plus a sink, fridge, grill, and wine cooler are seen. Aft, it finishes up with a ready-to-launch inflatable tender and outboard, which is lifted by a hydraulic davit that is molded into the port aft deck fairing. Very sleek and very Lazzara. The extended aft Fly deck provides almost full shade for the lower aft Main deck, also adding visual amplitude to the hull. All of this is accessible by a fanciful circular staircase between the flybridge deck and the lower aft deck.
  5. With all Lazzara 116’s opportunities for fun and travel o’er the seven seas, the wide rear deck and swim platform, with a mount for a single runabout, hides yet another surprise, going away. The two final hull fenders which circuit the swim platform stairs, are shown here closed. But, another secret: each is a small garage that holds a PWC, ready to delight the adventurous generation. Access to the engine room and support equipment is through a water proof door located on the stern, flanked by the port & starboard staircases.
  6. Down a short stairway forward, the main pilothouse is concisely business-oriented in its treatment of the vast instrumental array. With deeply glossed cherrywood cabinetry and beams, the display features flat panel 12” wide screen depictions for nav courses, monitors and switches, overlooking the big tempered windshields. Immediately aft is a settee for observers, in leather upholstery. Bookshelves are above; the Captain’s desk holds charts and manuals.
  7. Electronics systems include Simrad VHF, Panasonic KXTA824 phones, plus cellular and KVH Satellite, monitor alarms. Navigation includes Northstar GPS, Nobeltec, Navtec and Furuno for autopilot, radar, compass, chart plotter, speed and depth. A central TV distribution system covers all rooms on the yacht.
  8. Entering the salon through sliding glass doors from the aft deck, guests are greeted with an open floor plan bringing the salon, dining area and wet bar together into one setting. Immediately to starboard is flat screen television nestled into a purpose-built wall unit that is angled forward for all-inclusive viewing.
  9. Looking forward, the open floor plan is tied together with a creative carpet treatment, as the plush, deep, sand-and-sea motif sets the mood for the living areas. With lengthy, tinted side windows contrasting sandy tans and deep greens, the offset to its teak-mahogany floor creates a genuinely beach-bungalow dwelling. There’s a loveseat, sofa, upholstered chairs. The genial atmosphere is sure to stimulate friendly conversation from all sides. To starboard, a serving bar with granite top stands ready with refreshments.
  10. Just forward of the raised pilothouse, the galley follows Lazzara’s well-accepted, country kitchen theme, with a raised dining settee forward, located under a galley-house skylight which offers electrically controlled, variable intensity tint… another yachting first.
  11. The galley itself is well laid out, with a central preparation island, topped with light green-hued granite counter tops and an island sink. The wrap-around counters to port and aft receive the same treatment, including a double stainless sink, a multi-burner surface cook-top, 27” oven, recessed halogen lighting, and dual refrigerator-freezers. Cherry-planked floors and Makore wood paneling complete the homey outfitting.
  12. One splendid example of Lazzara’s custom service is this specially designed chair lift. The built-in track allows a wheelchair user to readily transit the stairways up and down, between the main deck and lower accommodations. In addition, provisions were made in the form of a widened boarding gate on the aft deck, as well as widened entries into one of the VIP suites and bath. With these modifications, the L-116 has become an important new addition to the charter sector, opening up the world of yachting to less mobile guests.
  13. Upon descending the staircase to the lower deck, the turquoise marble foyer floor is back lit with a striking milky-way inlay that picks up the natural wood colors used throughout the boat. The foyer leads to the master stateroom at ship’s center, and two forward VIP staterooms. There is also a large study/library with a convertible sofa for an extra guest.
  14. Configuring all the staterooms, including crew quarters, on the lower deck, allows more companionable room on other decks for socializing. Yet the Master suite, beam wide, is quite commodious, with double door access. Its king size berth is centered, foot forward, with paneled headboard and storage beneath. It also sports a large vanity dresser as well as twin walk-in closets, and a conversation area sofa. Makore wood is used extensively in cabinets and drawers. Wall coverings throughout feature wallpaper, or foam-backed polyolefin fabrics – by Maharam. A manual safe in the closet guards valuables.
  15. The Master bath is shown here from one side, at the starboard beam. An eclectic concept with wide mirrors and twin individual molded clear glass wash basins; the shower is glass enclosed with a full size tub, pulsating shower and Jacuzzi located at the port beam; while the toilet is at the opposite beam, enclosed in its own compartment. A linen closet is well placed. Fixtures are brushed stainless steel. Floors are white/peach-streaked onyx marble.
  16. Two VIP staterooms are placed at opposite beams, facing each other, while a third is nestled into the forepeak; shown here. All feature queen size berths as well as walk-in closets. Each is characterized with beautifully finished cherrywood cabinets, white carpeting, with ensuite heads/showers. The forward VIP benefits from a strategically positioned deck hatch for stargazing. Crew quarters are aft, with a Captain’s separate cabin and two crew cabins with single or bunk beds. There is also a crew lounge with cooking facilities and entertainment.
  17. The port VIP was specifically configured for wheelchair accessibility. The berth is positioned against the hull side for increased floor space and the entryway door has been widened. Not shown in this picture is a partition between the starboard and port VIP's that folds away, granting better access between the suites.
  18. Lazzara 116’s engine room is designed so that full head room and walk around space are plentiful. The twin MTU Series 2000 @ 2000 hp turning T 3.48:1 Twin Disc transmissions are abetted by American Bow Thruster thrusters and stabilizers. All instruments and mechanical components are set on cushioned mounts, with double-insulated bulkheads, acoustically insulated, to virtually eliminate sound and vibration throughout the yacht while running and at dockside.
  19. The L-116's shaft & strut running gear spin a pair of five bladed, Nibral Rolla propellers. Partial prop-pockets are recessed into the hull to minimize draft and reduce the thrust line output angle. Coupled with a keel, this configuration partially shrouds thrust and increases straight line tracking. Below the waterline, the L-116 is a hand-laid, unidirectional, vacuum-bagged, balsa core hull. Areas prone to impact, such as the keel and chines are solid glass, as well as any thru-hull fittings. The remaining sub-surface areas are double-sandwiched for redundancy and strength.
  20. Has Lazzara thought of everything on this 116' marvel? Probably not, because at their rate of innovation, it's a sure bet they'll debut something new next year and every year. The L-116 is a culmination of Lazzara's fortitude and decades of turning ideas into waterborne reality. In this case, Lazzara has made yachting a reality for the physically challenged and in doing so, has added yet another level of commitment to their family's continuing excellence.
