  1. Hatteras New 64' Motoryacht

    by Capt. Chuck Gnaegy

Hatteras customers asked for it; now Hatteras Yachts makes an
evolutionary leap into compact luxury; with a mid-size megayacht...

Hatteras, ever at the forefront of satisfying customers desires, has added yet another fabulous new design to its coterie, in the H-64 Motoryacht. As the result of customer input at rendeszvous and feedback interviews of its previous H-63 Motoryacht, Hatteras reached into its idea bank to come up with another winner, with a revised and roomier interior. This vessel – for what a number of experienced yachtsmen feel – is on the threshold of the optimal size yacht which can be cruised single handed, or by a couple. That said, the H-64 offers a number of options which make it a great family or party boat as well.

The new Hatteras 64 Motoryacht was so well received in its debut at the Miami Boat Show; Hatteras has received four orders on the spot from eager yachtsmen. That was merely an exclamation point for a record year just ended. According to Bryant Phillips, senior vice president: “We are thrilled to have experienced a 41 percent increase in total revenue over last year’s Miami Boat Show, wrapping up our season in an outstanding manner,” Phillips said. “We saw orders across the product line from the U.S. and international as well.”
  2. Designed to meet stringent Hatteras construction codes, it utilizes a solid fiberglass hull bottom; hull sides and superstructure laminated with Divinicell core; fiberglass stringers, with steel laminated in stringers at key locations to bolt engine mounts. All decks are non-skid surface polyurethane paint with polymeric beads. Blister-resistant vinylester resin forms the hull bottom skin coat. Engine room bulkheads and decks are resin-infused composite construction using PVC foam core, with layers of fiberglass laminate on each side.

Hatteras, a unit of Brunswick Corp., launched its first fiberglass powerboat in 1959. Based in New Bern, NC, the company is recognized as a world leader in design and construction of sportfishing and luxury motor yachts from 50’ to 100’. Hatteras utilizes its popular convex hull shape, which allows for larger interior room forward, plus giving the yacht a softer ride in choppy, rough water. Yet, with uniquely designed propeller tunnels, this craft boasts a mere 4’6” draft, even though it carries the heaviest of engines. Its big CAT C-18s drive it to a top speed of 28 knots; although larger CAT and MTU engines, optional, will deliver ever higher tops.
  3. Besides getting there in record time, comfort is also the watch-word for many long-time Hatteras owners, who return time and again to move up to their next advance in yachting. This Hatteras yacht also delivers, with a list of amenities that leads the parade in “small” luxury megayachts. Check out this lineup:

The Hatteras 64' M/Y’s social center salon provides a full-beam 190 sq. ft. salon, with a strategically placed C-shaped couch in butter-soft cream leather, providing seating for six, located just athwart, facing twin, deep-cushioned easy chairs. Separated by a hefty Swedish-style oak and glass coffee table, salon space is nicely arranged. Woodwork finish throughout the vessel – black cherry wood veneers – reflects a mirrored depth of gloss that is phenomenal, sporting numerous coats of lusty, glistening acrylic. (Interior surfaces are also available in satin finish). At port forward, a 37” plasma TV fulfills entertainment needs, along with surround-sound speakers and CD/DVD. Between the twin easy chairs, fine wood cabinetry presents convenient and copious glass and bottle storage.
  4. Three steps up and forward is the fully equipped galley, to starboard, 146 sq.ft. with the nicely fitted, C-curved dinette, to port. With under-seat storage, the full-size dining table is hinged in the center to provide full aisle-passage underway.
  5. Across the aisle, featuring an island food-prep area with contained sink, the galley also holds an easily accessible under-counter Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer with icemaker; convection/microwave oven; and four-burner ceramic cook-top. Stowage cabinetry is copious, both up and down; countertops are solid-surface, with backsplashes. Non-skid vinyl strip flooring offers easy clean-up.

Just forward, in close proximity to the dining alcove – so that diners may critique the Captain’s performance – the lower helm fully dominates the view through wood-framed forward windshields. Facing a full instrument and navigational array, it gives a total picture of the ship’s systems at all times, as well as pilot age intelligence.
  6. Reached via a central stairwell in the galley, the bridge deck – a huge 289 sq.ft. – boasts 360 degrees of unencumbered view under the fashionable radar arch. An additional full helm offers captain’s and navigator’s upholstered, adjustable chairs, while an L-shaped lounge seats a compact crowd, just aft. There is also a dry bar to starboard, plus a refrigerator, as well as ample storage for comestibles. Beyond all that, aft, a 1,100-lb. rotational, fully hydraulic davit controls the launch of a dinghy or RIB up to 14’.
  7. Down the central staircase (or from the aft deck) the full beam master suite is centered, fore and aft, on the lower deck, dominated by a king-size berth with twin night stands, and voluminous cedar-lined storage beneath. Spacious as this haven is, a ceiling with 6’11” of headroom may seem an anomaly on a yacht this size; but it gives the appearance of an even much larger compartment. Creature comfort is emphasized here, with a pair of dressers and wardrobes, for his and hers special arrangements without territorial conflicts, plus a private head/shower, 20” TV, and a large soaking tub.

For those who require a 4-stateroom design, a special area with twin upper/lower berths can be allocated.
  8. Forward on the lower deck, the VIP stateroom presents a queen-size berth, with stowage beneath, at the bow. Ample hanging locker space is also allotted, as well as a private head/shower.
  9. Also on the lower deck, portside, a third stateroom offers side-by-side twin berths, with a convenient spacer-conversion to a queen-size. This stateroom also proffers a private head/shower.
  10. Aft, down a six-step staircase at starboard from the flybridge, the aft deck presents yet another broad-shouldered entertainment area, 106 sq.ft., with a weather-proof fiberglass couch nearly beam wide, and a solid-surface table of equal length for dining or gaming. The full stern view overlooks the extended swim platform; plus, it provides night-time lighting, and stereo. To access the engine room, a gas-operated lift quickly raises the stairs, and a hinged entry opens to a maritime mechanic’s delight.

(This picture is was taken prior to full completion and is for reference purposes only.)
  11. Down below, at the heart of propulsion in the polyurethane white-painted engine room and bilge, the twin CATs purr in unison with walk-around space for servicing. Located here as well are essential equipment components: fuel tanks and filters, macerator for the holding tank, electronics voltage stabilizer/boost transformer. Also, below are the power steering mechanism, dripless manganese bronze shaft and rudder seals, water manifold block, and stainless steel rudder tie bar, sealed sumps and sea chest.

    Picture to be uploaded shortly...
  12. Hatteras, in its quest for the ultimate luxury motoryacht. has debuted a complete package in this handsome and well designed 64 M/Y, certain to add to its already impressive reputation.
