  1. Hargrave 105' "Dream"
Another Fine Addition to the Family

    by Capt. Chuck Gnaegy

When Sam Shalem decides to give a party he likes to launch it in style:
which means perhaps 40 or 50 of his family and closest friends will board his yacht in
Manhattan, or Nassau's Paradise Island, or the Exumas, for a soiree they will never forget.
Though not a dreamy sort, it has long been his dream to do just that; so his latest party-
yacht fits right in to his plans. This Dream -- his Hargrave 105'-- will accommodate the
entire party on its generous flybridge deck, and still have room for a 5-piece band.

Hargrave Yachts can usually be quickly identified in any marina or at sea -- they have a straightforward, confident, executive air about them; one that says "Board Room" or "Wall Street". They exude top drawer styling in any silhouette against the horizon. The exterior quietly, firmly, announces "Hargrave Custom Yachts".

  2. Come aboard this Dream, however, and see a striking interior co-designed by owner Sam Shalem, with some highly unusual decor choices. It represents his ultra-modern concept of how daily living and entertainment should be conducted aboard a luxury vessel, while continuing its accord with the builder's strict yacht-building dominion.
  3. Like all Hargrave's, Dream was designed to meet the criteria of DNV rules for fiberglass lamination and structural requirements; from sheer to keel, ABTC standards; and certified by Det Norsk Veritas for ISO 9002 yacht manufacturing; ABS and NKK, among others. Power for this magnificent machine is twin Caterpillar 1400 engines and ZF gears; upgrade potential to Caterpillar C-30 1550 hp. Dream will cruise at 17.5 knots and top out at 21 knots, boasting a range of 1,000 miles.
  4. The V-shaped keel and hull with longitudinal stringers are hand-laid fiberglass, vacuum bagged, with foam core reinforcement under fiberglass FRP bulkheads. Interior components are bonded to the hull, including bulkheads and frames. Main deck and floors are FRP, with a choice of teak or non-skid laminates on exterior decks. Engine beds are fiberglass, bonded to the hull with load distributed on steel channels.
  5. Dream's Captain Sharon is one of the few women skippers of a Raised Pilothouse Full Motoryacht of this size. But -- a woman Captain? When asked about his choice, Sam Shalem smiles, "When I hired Sharon I heard a lot of sexist comments from some sources, but they don't know her. From South Africa originally, she's the best; she can fish like no other angler; she can run the boat better than any other captain; and she has incredible patience."

Sharon proudly ushered us up a soaring stainless steel suspended staircase from the main deck, aft, and around the top deck. With numerous couches and bar stools, plus a full-sized Jacuzzi and state of the art flybridge helm, it is a party-goer's and yachting aficionado's delight. When the party's ready for a bigger splash pool, the aft deck shelters a speedy Sea-Doo jet boat and PWC’s, ready to launch for all the action you'd want in sheltered waters.
  6. Fully instrumented with first class gear to navigate the world's waters, it gives a clue to the high level of thinking and design, attention to detail this yacht displays. A normally overlooked example is cover plates for all screws and wires throughout the radar arch, crane base on the flybridge, aft deck, bow, and swim platform, so all present a smooth, flawless, deluxe exterior.
  7. While there is a lavish use of natural teak decking throughout, from the rear deck and its near beam-wide observation table and chairs, what catches your eye is a fold-down, flat-panel television that tucks neatly away into the covered aft deck. Perfect for keeping in touch with the real world, while living in your own. Just forward, the salon is entered through a pair of weighty, 3/4" sliding glass doors.
  8. Immediately we sense Shalem's artful use of the outre', with arching, sinuous ovoid cabinetry, under a lavish ceiling valance that echoes its trademark, backed by an ecru vinyl-covered ceiling over all. Flaunting a diamond-shaped, inverted parabolic ellipse, fashioned of exotic African Makore wood, the symbol is a pirouetting marquette; a star-diamond that repeats throughout the yacht's many avenues. It is only the beginning of Shalem's remarkable decor, which was abetted by Interiors by Shelley.

Festooned with Romans shades, deep-cushioned couches, generous easy chairs and cleverly executed, thick glass cocktail tables, the salon offers the opportunity for several avenues -- conversation, games, or simple relaxing enjoyment. To starboard, a half-circle, granite-topped bar presents a set of stools for voyageurs who crave a libation, while being entertained with a 42" rising plasma TV. The bar is backed up with a fascinating, decorative brass mirror as well. Just forward to port, the dining area sports an ovoid, glass dining table with its six-chair grouping of crocodile leather and exotic fabric seating.
  9. Viewed here from the helm station, the "country kitchen " galley presents a sparkling open plan of spacious areas for work and passage. Granite countertops stretch from one end to the other, while cabinetry above and below exhibit microwave ovens, dishwashers, and copious numbers of drawers for flatware and tableware. The luminous white tile flooring is trademarked with the single reverse-ellipse diamond marquetry. Toward the bow, a cozy semi-circular table is set up, with chairs and stools, for snacking, just aft of the major helm. Owner Shalem takes his stewardship seriously here as well, sometimes acting as "head chef."
  10. Another of his unexpected anomalies is a space between the helm station and the galley. It's a perfect picture window, aport, floor to ceiling and five feet wide; it offers a clear, open view to the port side, invaluable for docking or total observation to the horizon. For onlookers lounging just aft on comfortable, padded couches, a 25" TV keeps track of the outside world; or entertains with videos, when the seas are flat and calm.

Captain Sharon exults in the fully equipped helm with its trio of leather Stidd adjustable chairs. She also captained Shalem's earlier yacht, a 92' Hargrave, and appreciates the carryover of instrumentation and location standardized by the builder. "I've been with Mister Shalem for three years now," she says, "and he has encouraged me all along. I've known for some time that yachting is my future."
  11. Total instrumentation and monitors are displayed via four large screens, for radar, sat-nav, sonar, with stabilizers, engine performance, bow thrusters, and a bevy of surveillance cameras overseeing every detail. The skipper sees that each model of performance is identically checked on both the central and flybridge helm stations. Shalem often sits in here as well, taking great enjoyment in his handiwork; indulging his penchant for management, even on board.
  12. A prelude to the evening and the quiet deck, this singular hallway design welcomes mariners to their night of rest. Notice the array of African makore cherry and mahogany woods and the inlaid "Dream" signature carving set in the deck. Oblong glass shelving and defused overhead lighting contribute to the atmosphere. Shown at the end of the hall is a twin berth guest room. Of special amenities on the yacht, listed are 7 separate TV/MP3 receivers with activated sliding screens, 26" to 42" and separate volume controls. Xantech touch-pads deliver music on demand to each stateroom, aft deck and galley; boasting SAT-HD symphony receivers.
  13. Style and expressiveness are the words for the master's excellent arrangement of sleeping quarters. Full beam width, ecru ceilings and walls, accented by makore cherry and mahogany woods, and a just right elevation to the king size berth, make this a model bedroom to be cherished. Twin cedar-lined, walk-in closets cache enough costumery to cover any occasion. An overstuffed couch to port and a rare wood vanity to starboard complete the amenities. In one corner, a small computer desk adds business capability.
  14. Dominated by its spaciousness, double sink decorative marble countertops in tangerine, russet and black, and a huge curved glass shower with Italian fixtures in gold, the master bath is a study in voluptuous expression. Soft, overhead starlighting adds drama. All staterooms are accommodated with dual track curtains or Roman shades, equal to those in the salon.
  15. A starboard VIP guest room features an identical to the master's king-size berth, on pedestal, with an ovoid wood headboard, sporting luxurious fabrics and makore wood closet doors -- cedar lined. Its private head/shower is just across the hallway. The scalloped wood valences are also present, over a stretch of draped windows.
  16. A close duplicate of the master's bath, the VIP also presents a huge curved glass shower, or tub, with ornate Italian fixtures in chrome. The headliner is white vinyl, with recessed lighting on micro switches.
  17. Twin comfort is offered in a pair of large, port and starboard guest rooms, each offering its own ensuite head/shower. Amenities include lengthy, opening windows, TV and an entertainment center. The decor theme is also carried out here. Either twin could also be used as a crew quarters if needed.
  18. Captain's and crew's quarters are located forward, down a curving flight of stairs that lands in a "Galley Down" location. The crew mess has a relaxing couch room, settee, compact galley and Samsung 15" TV. Forward, in the bow, a double and two singles are provided along with a washer & dryer.
  19. Owner Sam Shalem is justifiably proud of his yacht and this sea-going accomplishment. As he sums it up: "I spent a lot of time and money getting this the way I wanted it." Most assuredly, it turned out just fine. It turned out, obviously... to be a Dream. <end>
