Review: Hargrave 84' Raised Pilothouse

Staterooms below, accessed by a forward stairs next to the dinette, have accommodations for up to 10 guests, with a common center-line foyer. A VIP is forward, with two guest mid-ship staterooms on either side and a full-beam master stateroom just aft.
Relax on the king-sized bed in the Sapelli and Maitore wood finished master with a 42-inch TV. A vanity to port with pull out seat faces three large oval windows. Twin, full-sized closets are situated in the room corners, with two full-sized dressers along the sides. End-tables flank the bed. His/her heads continue the Maitore wood motif, with granite counters and backsplashes. A disguised hatch in the ceiling allows for emergency egress, exit just behind the galley on the main deck.
The master head has his/her sinks and toilets, sharing a center shower with Grohe fixtures, finished in marble and brown onyx. This layout helps to insulate the sleeping area from extraneous noise from the adjoining engine room. This picture doesn't convey the actual size of the shower, which is huge by any measure.
The VIP includes a king-sized berth, two hanging closets, full head with marble accents and 20-inch flat screen TV. The two guest staterooms mirror each other as to layout and décor. Each has portholes for lighting and ventilation, and the heads feature gloss Maitore wood finish and shower stalls. Twin single berths are standard but can be slid together to create a queen-sized bed. Pullman berths in each room add convenience when there are a few extra kids on board.
Access to the engine room is from the outside aft bulkhead entrance, where you will also find the crew quarters. As Michael Joyce envisioned the Hargrave 84 with the owner/operator in mind, he planned for crew in the event an owner prefers to give up the conn or for those times when an extra hand is needed. Walking in, there is one bunk with a Pullman berth, sitting chair, desk and plenty of draw storage to starboard. To port is the head, with sink and shower stall. There are studio apartments in New York City smaller than this.
Upon entering the neat and compact engine room, your eye is drawn to the centerline sea chest and the multiple but clearly labeled, air conditioner units, lined up on a shelf like soldiers at the ready. Simulated diamond plate floor panels are light to help reduce weight and facilitate movement when access to the lower engines or bilge is needed. Electrical power is courtesy of two 30 kw Northern Lights gen sets. The yacht runs 220 volt, 110 volt and 60 hz electrical systems. A center-line keel runs almost fully aft for stability and is equipped with Naiad Stabilizers sporting 9 sq. ft. fins, adding to the stability factor when underway. And for the extra nudge when docking, a 36-hp hydraulic bow thruster is at the ready. A stern thruster can be added.
Propulsion is supplied by twin Caterpillar C32 engines (1675 hp), coupled to ZF gears and controlled by Glendinning electronic controls, spinning four-blade bronze props. Delta-T filtration and fans keep the big blocks breathing in clean air. Engine beds are fiberglass, bonded to the hull with the load distributed on steel channels. A Reverso oil change pump system handles the task for the engines and generators. Fire suppression is by a Sea Fire FE-200 fire extinguisher system. Preventive maintenance should be easy as the Racor 1000 FG fuel filters/water separators as well as the Cat engine oil filters are inboard along the center line.
Unique, innovative ideas such as the satellite helm station, bring more value and a better experience to yacht ownership. While design and technology remain paramount, Michael Joyce understands something more important... the friendships built around his boats. And with this, Hargrave's extended family continues to grow.

EXTERIOR DETAILS

Storage abounds everywhere, inside and out. Shore lines and hoses are tucked away under this forward compartment.
A small storage compartment off the swim platform also provides access to a Glendinning shorepower system...
On the main aft deck, the gangway ramp has its own compartment nestled into the superstructure. Wide side decks with 1-½ inch handrails made of 316 stainless steel alloy and two boarding gates per side make transiting the yacht easy, especially when handling lines. The full exterior walk around helps maintain privacy for owners as crew can get around outside. Decking options can be either non-skid or teak, you decide.
A stainless and teak ladder leads from the aft deck to the fybridge. Notice the lights under each step that illuminate each step below.
Aft deck lighting, docking lights and a video camera are integrated into the aft deck overhang.
The stanchions on the flybridge deck that carry the hardtop are contoured to the shape of the hardtop for better support. It may have been easier to cut a notch in the fiberglass top, but that may have weakened the structure.
