Although I was on a boat with MTU 16v2000's and (aside from one coming apart at 350 hrs), they ran great but were a bit noisy at cruise. Had a lot of turbo whine. Economy was good as well. |

The smoke used to be horrendous, due to no pre-heaters. In the marina in Antibes I used to have to go around all my neighbours and ask them to shut their portholes and doors before I started-up; all with straight through exhausts.
Once, while in Corsica, I took my girlfriend to lunch in the hills, leaving the deckhand to run the motors up. I could see and hear the darn things from almost 2 miles away.
