Best laid plans gone wrong...

Oh, good. Got the new shafts of the re-build in last week. Fit just right.
Yesterday the Props turned up on time, 29.5 X 31 ( look a bit small but thats what the old plans said).
Then the rudders arrived, looking just the job. Lifted the yacht in high winds in the Travellift to slot them up. Just Dandy. Put nuts on top of the shaft. Eer No! After sending the old ones back to the factory they made perfect new ones only they forgot to look which 2 1/4" pitch thread they cut. Normal pitch is 8 per inch but they cut them 7 per inch for thread cut. So now we have to make chuffin' new nuts of a weird thread no one uses any more.

This is not a technical question but just letting off a bit of steam.

Any other stories where you just want to throttle someone for something simple?

Aaarrrgggghhhrrrrrr!!!

Simple solution, if it don't fit get a hammer. If it still don't fit get a bigger hammer. Then use it on the head of whoever made the nut. I'm getting set to use a real big hammer myself within the next week or so. Won't bore you with the details. Suffice to say it's spring and around here most of the people who work on boats made their livings working on cars and houses until recently. They can sure talk a good game though, through both sides of their mouths.

I've been resisting posting the solution to your problem for about an hour but finally can no longer resist.
This was said to me in a very similar situation, just once.
Turn the nut over and try it that way.

Unfortunetly the nuts are cut to take the rams on two sides. I'm just off to work now to see if we can get her in the water today. Will letyou know later.

Sometimes you just have to laugh when these things happen. The alternative is to have one of the pipes in your head or chest fail. Sorry, humour doesn't always translate well.
Experience convinces me that when it comes to writing a specification for any outside contractor that I'm not paranoid, they are out to get me.
Imagine driving off the highway for the first view of a new office/plant facility and seeing that the driveway at the gate is four feet above the main road level and is beautifully shored up with a retaining wall built of 16 inch I beams. Yes, Virginia there is a measurement standard that uses a 10 inch foot. Who'd a thunk it?
You'd think that someone would have wondered about having to truck in hundreds of cubic metres of gravel to build up the roadbed when that wasn't anywhere in the costing for the project. Perhaps having to build a temporary access road to the site since the raised driveway made access impossible would have caused someone to make a phone call.
I laughed then and I still have to laugh at it now.

We could turn this thread in to a reference work. All the miss-communications, miss-interpretations and translation errors that we've had to pay for. Perhaps prevent someone from making the same errors. Lord knows I'm running lower on the time left to make all the possible errors myself although, from outward appearances, I do seem to have an almost religious dedication to the pursuit of making them all myself.

Yup, I often wonder who that old guy looking back at me in the mirror is. Don't know him, and wonder how he got in to my house. Bugger isn't even paying me rent that I know of.

"Of course the threads on that shaft are cut the right way. I'm right handed so of course it's a right thread. If you want it to be a left handed thread then just turn the nut over and screw it on using your left hand." This could only be said with a straight face and the level of earnest self-assurance possessed by a youngster.

It's Labour Day weekend here in the UK and my fuel pump gives up on me. Everything else has been serviced or renewed but one thing. Murphy's Law or do The Gods just enjoy playing with Yachtsmen?

We have another chance on Friday (Liberation Day, throwing off the shackles of the Nazi jackboot here in Guernsey) I bet she doesn't run any better halfway to Sark.

Do the gods enjoy playing with yachtsmen? Are you kidding Dave? They love it. And Murphy, he rides along like a mother in law. As long as the bilge is dry keep the glass half full and enjoy. How many cruise to your marina for the holiday? Around here I always get a kick out of all the boats coming from Ct. to LI as everyone from LI heads for Ct. We all know that in boating plan B is the real plan A . Happy holiday.
