HDW - "Octopus" in Port Everglades

This was a surprise... took a cruise on Sunday from Ft. Lauderdale down to Miami to check on the new "Niki Beach". As we passed through Port Everglades (which has up to 8 or more cruise ships in port on weekends) we spot a smaller than average cruise ship!

For those of you not familiar with this new GIANT in the yachting world, it is the new 413' "Octopus", built by Lurssen. It belongs to Paul Allen (Microsoft). Rumor has it that this "ship" has a helicopter landing pad on the aft deck with a built-in hangar!

Sorry I couldn't take closer pictures, or side shots, but the port authority doesn't allow civilian boats to break from navigation channels since 9/11.

Well Carl, only the other day I was thinking about telling you that Octopus had arrived at Port Everglades and I was almost asking you if it was possible to go and take a look...

I can't wait to see her. I expect her to come over to the Med soon and certainly for the big events coming up : Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco GP.

Absolutely phenomenal model! Is this another one of Promoceanmodel's masterpieces?

The auxilary heli-pad on the bow gives this yacht the unique distinction of having the "best bow ornament" to ever grace a yacht! I have no doubt this was created in exact scale, however the helicopter on the aft deck looks slightly smaller in scale size. What do you think?

One more thing...what would you estimate the cost to be on the Octopus model? (I'm guessing the model costs as much as some small yachts!)

Carl

NO - this is not my model!!! It comes from a wellknown factory based in Hamburg. They are doing models for this very special clientele and the superyards. A model like this will have a price of USD 25.000 or more. I don't know really. But similar models from them are in this prizerange. They are the best modellers from germany, and I can remember that they did supermodels 30 years ago.
Last year there was an article about them in german yachtmagazine >Boote Exclusiv<.

I saw Octopus too

Hi Guys,

Just got back from a Eastern Caribbean cruise, as we left Ft. Lauderdale, looking back saw Octopus moored on the outside of the breakwall. Wow, what a vessel. My 13 year old son knew the vessel, told me quite a bit about it, he must read Power & Motoryacht more carefully than me.

I have some pics too, they're side shots, but from pretty far away, and it was really hazy that day.

Octopus in October 2003

Well Carl, I have to tell you that Octopus wasn't built by Lürssen.
Lürssen was the main contractor, but did only some interior work for the owner spaces at HDW. So the ship was completely built at HDW. Look at my HDW thread. I will take your pictures and comments also into that thread.

HDW Octopus built 2003
Delivery 2003

Measuring 9700 BRT

Power 14.880 kW

Whoops!!

Thanks for correcting me Berndt!

I obtained the dimensions for Octopus from another source that had stated the yacht was built by Lurssen. As this yacht was shrouded in a vail of secrecy while it was being built, it's no surprize that a little "misinformation" was floating around.

Sorry!

Carl (better at identifying a Boston Whaler!) Camper
