It says in the original article it was a steering gear failure

    They are containerships, not tankers.

Looks like the ship with the "steering problem" never came off the throttles?

Do you think a ship that size will stop quickly if the engine speed is reduced?

Are you saying they don't stop on a dime?

Of course they need a couple three miles to stop however it appeared to me the wash was still going aft and no attempt was made to reduce the speed. I would think that, while one knew they could not stop in time, that they would at least attempt to reduce the speed a little.

The two ships would have come together not had one cross the bow of the other like in the vid if this were the case.

I guess you waited 9 months from joining so you could make your first post perfect. This was it? I don't think so. If at first you don't succeed, try try again.

I wonder how steep are the banks of the canal. When he makes the abrupt turn to port, it looks like he was pretty close to the bank although it s har to tell. We're they concerned about running aground and we're hoping to cut back behind the maersk?

I don't know; Are dedicated pilots used in these canals? Traffic control? In confined canals like this and a meeting, would the pilots be communicating bridge to bridge long before they got close?
Like a merge onto I-95, at least use a blinker?

I hope all is well and nobody was hurt. Think some career changes would usually happen.
