Is April or May when yachts in the FL or Carribean area get repositioned to the Med, assuming that's what the owners desire? I noticed in some of the Carribean area threads there were some references to the season winding down.

Thats pretty much it.

Travelling back to MED in April gives a chance for a quick yard job before the summer season gets underway.

Also for charter boats the first show is the end of this month in Genoa.

Do yachts offer "repositioning fares" when crossing back and fourth for someone looking for the experience and not necessarily the full blown pampering of a regular booking?

Hi,

Not that I am aware of , some of the yachts do look for extra watchkeepers on the crossings and people can get a ride that way but you will generally need the appropriate Certificate of Competency for Deck or Engine depending on where you will be used underway.

It will also help if you know someone onboard or know someone that does who can speak up for you if you do not have any reputation in the business yourself

Usually no, the last thing you want is someone you don't know, without experience, going nuts in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.........I know I wouldn't......

They usually leave now to get yard work done, then get to the Med for the med season and also to avoid the hurricane season in the Carribbean.........

It appears as though there are three yacht migration patterns.

1. Carribean to the Med and back

2. FL/Carribean to the Great Lakes and back.

3. Baja California to CA/OR/WA or AK and back. This one seems to be similar to the whale migration pattern.

There is another that is becoming more popular, the Med to the South Pacific and back again.

That's similar to one of two treks my Father does. Carib to SP, or Carib to Med.

I hear Phuket is becoming a favorite place for superyachts.

Cook Islands / Rarontonga, one in the same, Aitutaki, and general cruising in the area. East coast of Australia and New Zealand, Fiji, etc. I've not made the journey with him, but caught a flight to meet up with him there a couple years ago.

If I recall, it's rather lengthy, and kind of a PITA. I think is was Carib, through the canal, north to Baha, across to Hawaii, S/SE to Soma, then down to Avarua.

I 99% sure the trip to Phuket is the other direction. Carib, south, then across to SA, Madagascar, then Phuket.

As I understand it from him, basically, once you get there, it's time to wipe the chart table and re-plot home.
