I read somewhere that you don't have to pay Florida Sales Tax as long as you remove the vessel from Florida within 6 months. Any truth to that?

You'll be paying it somewhere and Florida recently enacted some good tax caps.

If you buy a boat in Florida, your broker can sell you a sticker to allow you to cruise for 90 days without paying Florida tax, if you plan to leave the state. You should pay the tax in a timely fashion in the state where you plan to keep the boat. Most states have reciprocity, so you will only have to pay once.

If you buy a boat in the state of Florida from a licensed yacht broker, and you do not own property in Florida nor are an officer of a Fl. Corp., then you can stay in the state for 90 days on a 90 day Sales Tax Exemption decal. You can elect to purchase a decal through your broker for an additional 90 days for a total of 180 days after purchase without paying sales tax. Yes, Florida legislators recently passed a yacht sales and use tax cap of $18,000.
