| iPhone- Favorite Nautical Apps
I have found some great app's for my I-phone for use while on the water. The following are a few of my favorites.-
Hurricanesoftware.com- Tracking hurrincanes and tropical storms
Navionics chart software- For the low price you get the whole US east coast and Bahamas.
Wind Alert- Check out wind reports and bouys from around the country
Tides- Automatically searches your area
The Weather Channel- Great for real time wx of your area.
Non Maritime app's-
Yellow pages
Skype
iheartradio- Listen to your favorite morning show while traveling
NYtimes
Some of these are free and others you have to pay for.
If you have some favorite maritime links, add to the list

Thanks for that hurricane app... I was looking for one last week while Bill passed Halifax. I ended up using the NHC site for the most part. That app looks like a simplified and more direct access to their data. Good find.

What I want to know is: If the i-phone is so great why does my AT&T stock only move in one direction ?
I have to correct myself. I just got notified that it went Up $0.01 today. Thanks whoever bought that last unit.

Hi,
Ed IMO your poor stock choices are not something for YF. I am sure there are many members here who have lost a lot of money on vapourware (my term for stock value that just seems to disappear into the air we breathe) in the last 18 - 24 months myself included. You don't see anyone else *****ing about that do you?

Let's get back on topic. Randy posted a good thread idea. If someone comes across useful nautical apps, please post.

You missed my point, but that's OK. Let's stay more clearly on topic. Do these apps give info that isn't readily available through other, possibly more convenient sources? What are some more of the apps recommended? What is the cost? How is reception and access?

While it may not be nautical one of the more helpful apps that I have is the free unit converter. Does everything from money to volume and speed. Oh, and dont forget the app that orders Chipotle for you |

I prefer the National Weather Service app, then again I prefer to use NOAA/NWS on the computers as well... weather.gov - no filtering or pretty packaging of the same information, and more importantly no ads.
I use ClockIn for tracking my billable hours for clients, XpenseIt to track my business expenditures (to make sure I don't commingle business and personal - not even a paper clip Ed!), Dynolicious and AccuFuel for ballpark numbers in data collection for my work, Trapster and Google Maps for planning land routes, then UrbanSpoon and Yelp to help find eats when I get there.
Plus I use the built-in tethering (ssssshhhh, don't let AT&T know!) to connect back to the home network and the rest of the world when I'm somewhere without WiFi.
The only thing the iPhone doesn't have an app for is finding clients that are going to pay and weeding out ones that are going to go broke first! |

I also use the converter and tide apps. Additionally I use tiltmeter and translator, and occasionally, if desperate enough, flashlight.
Thanks for the hurricane app. Does anyone know of an app that has a compass?

Do you mind my asking what kind of phone bill that generates each month. A guy recently told me that it costs him $40 a month for internet access plus his regular bill, plus whatever for apps (although some are free).

Most of the apps I download are either free or cheap ($.99-1.99).
My usual monthly AT&T bill is for 2 cell phones w/1400 min + package incl free nites/wknds, etc, 50mb for iPhone, & 200 text messages: $170-195.
However, I just got my bill that included a month's worth of roaming charges while in Canada: $1,587!! I knew there would be roaming charges so I was "careful", but holy mackerel, I was in Canada, not Antarctica!
