julio,
i guess i'll be the lightening rod. you appear (to Me) to be resisting the very advise you had asked for. is there a reason you appear to be hesitant (to me) to look in the Cabo or Viking direction?
just don't want to see you work against yourself, and make a purchase that is not best suited for you.

#18 | | | Stick to the Ocean Yacht in your price range
Of all the boats you mentioned, the newer Ocean Yachts are a good choice. Older Ocean yachts had a lot of problems including many of the handling problems you have heard here. The newer ones are much better. I am currently running a 54' and in the process of helping someone buy a 50' which I was very impressed with . we sea trialed it in 3-6' seas and ran 25 knots + right into it. However, we drifted side to and it rolled pretty badly. As long as we kept moving it handled very well. (I have run at least 7 diffferent older models of Oceans as well).
Keep in mind, Ocean is not as strong a quality as Viking Bertram Hatteras, but for the money you get a lot of boat. Capt Jay loves his Cabos but I have run 2 31', a 35' and 2 45' Cabos and I would not let any of my customers who fish rough water buy them. They are very hard riding and extremely wet although well built.

The 31' Cabo was the very first hull Cabo built and did pound and was wet and has long since been replaced. The 35' Cabo is a good boat, but the express is wet and the ride is a 7 out 0f 10. A 35' Carolina Classic is my favorite in that size express and eats any sea you throw at it, albeit not nearly as plush as the Cabo.
The 45' Cabo on the other hand is a great riding boat, very stable, and dry if you know how to run them and my favorite in their lineup. You have to keep the aft tank full of fuel and keep transfering fuel from the bow to the aft tank as you run the aft tank down and they ride great and are dry. This is on the 2001 and newer hulls. Most all sportfish like the bow tank run dry first such as the 50' Hatteras, 50' Egg Harbor, Cabo's etc. etc.......I ran a 45' Cabo about 3,000 NM and only had to slow down from 31 knot cruise to a 24 knot cruise 1 time.
The Cabo's are a very well built boat, thats nicely laid out, with a nice cockpit, with great factory support. Whats not to like about them?
As for the Ocean's, they're a good boat for their price point with a decent build quality. But nothing I would want to make a 120NM round trip to go fishing everytime in.

hi julio
basically long story short, the Rivieras i heard were not the best boat in a sea. a charter company my brother worked for had 3 boats, one was a 42 Riviera, they derigged her and sold it off after a short time.
there more of a cruiser family boat, designed for running up and down the inside of the islands.

The 42' I have not run or been on yet. I have indeed heard great things about it though.

Julio, If you like the Ocean Yachts, try to stretch to a 53' Ocean. They were "new generation" and you can probably find one in the mid 90's with MAN's (you want the 820 10 Cyl) at a price you can live with. Or you may find a newer one with 3406 CATs. Either package is good in that boat, and the boat itself is a decent sea boat.

When you sea trial it be sure to point it straight into the chop and after take the seas on the quarter. Those were the weak points I found with the 43. We'd cruise at 29kts (with Yanmars) normally, but straight in had us doing 12kts. Large, quartering seas had me using wheel, gears, throttle and tabs to hold course.

We just signed a deal for a 2002 56' Ocean for use in the Bahamas. From what I understand, it is a perfect boat for the Bahamas and we are pretty excited. Plenty boat for the price.
