You guys are killing me here! I started sailing at 8, taught it in my 20's and last years hurricane sank my Winga 860 sailboat, one of only 4 or 5 in the US, built in Sweden.

She was a sloop rigged 28.5 foot race-cruiser, lots of wood and room below, twin cabins in a center cockpit design, very unique. I did nearly 5 years of restoration work including have the hull re-gelled in a bright yellow! I had my Saffron Yellow Lotus Elise on order when i did that to Valkyrie Mist and what a pair of toys I was going to enjoy.

Unfortunatly life and hurricanes have a way of distrupting the fun.... She sank at the dock, tied tight all around, but the other sailboats in adjoining slips broke free, between upper damage at the toe rail and i think a bilge pump that just couldnt keep up with the tidal surge she sank. A complete total to insurance and a heartbreaker to me.

I have thought of a Perni Navi instead of a motoryacht, but I just don't see it fitting into the plans I now want in travel and space. I do though hope to put a day sailer on board or even a pair of mini 12's up hanging in the yachts garage, That way I can do some harbor sailing at least.

Who knows maybe I will meet a Perini or any big boat race/cruiser owner who would consider a trade for a few days in the carribean they can follow in the motoryacht in grand luxury and I can take thier sailboat for a spin... At the very least I am hoping to watch some of the bigger yacht races in the world in my travels.

Also I would probably join up a sailing club in the Caribe for leasing a sailboat of some size for the day or weekend as a alternative.

Red face New to Large Sail Yachts!

I love old sailing ships, clippers and scooners mostly. Being from Maine and now living near the coast it is a draw that is itching at me. But the new Yachts seem to not have the same draw. That high hull and big stern windows.

But all these pictures have helped. Also, I think a few trips up the coast would do me good.

Now that we are talking about real boats, look to the left at my avatar, a CSY 33 cutter rigged sloop.

1979 vintage and in great shape.

(Lars, ya may notice the Norwegian flag hanging from the spreader.. )

Not sure how to "super-size" the picture, but perhaps Carl can work his magic keyboard and do it...?

Speaking of LARGE, whatever happened to the sloop that dragged anchor and ran aground in the Med a year or two ago?
She was the worlds largest sailing yacht..Not sure if she got seriously damaged...
Or if the captain for fired for not setting an anchor watch.?

Can't remember the yacht's name, but she had headlines for a while, first when she was launched, then when she grounded.

Yes, it was indeed Mirabella V that ran aground in the med. Mr. Vittoria's son is a member here and has posted quite often. If you do a Search for "Mirabella V" you'll find a few threads in which he's posted, including one with a really nice video, as well as an interesting discussion about Mirabella V vs. the Maltese Falcon.

on another forum they described MALTESE FALCON as looking like a Chinese Junk. Ho hum thats one spectacular yacht and pioneering rig. Congrats to Turkey for building that beauty.

FRIDAY STAR - an interesting charter yacht because she is based on the schooner VENDREDI 13 which achieved second place in the 1972 OSTAR. At that time the mutihulls began to show their promise. A 42.4m built in 1994 at CMN Cherbourg. Her latest paintjob is beautiful.

GHOST a 122ft sloop built by Vitters and designed by ex-Wally designer Luca Brenta. MIRABELLA V in comparison is 248ft.
