Keels

Has any development been done on a sailboat using a "U" shaped keel?
I ask since I reailze that canting keels are in the vouge. But they are costly and have the potential for breakage.
All the sports boats are running around with a Roll Cage over their cockpit, then why not turn that upside down under a wide flatter hull forming a hydrafoil keel?
