J-Class Yachts

"Hanuman" is the latest J-Class yacht to be built and she was only delivered recently. She is the reincarnation -if you will- of the "Endeavour II", a previous J-class yacht as well. Here is some news of her and what she has been doing since delivery.

Quote:
"Hanuman", the re-creation of the J class yacht "Endeavour II", with naval architecture and exterior design by Dykstra & Partners and interior design from Pieter Beeldsnijder, lives up to her aspirations with a double win over Ranger at the Newport Bucket.

Having successfully completed her sail trials in Holland, Hanuman sailed transatlantic on her own keel to arrive in Newport RI with time for just five practice days of race training before the first gun in the 2009 Newport Bucket.

Crossing the infamous Bay of Biscay to make landfall in the Canaries, Hanuman dipped her bow southward to sail the well-travelled trade wind route and conserve her limited fuel supply before turning northward for Bermuda and Newport.

At Newport the stakes were high and the adrenaline flowing – this would not only be the first time that Hanuman would race, but this first encounter would be against the replica of her old arch-rival "Ranger".
History loomed large here in Newport because, in the controversial 1937 clash between Endeavour II and Ranger in the last ever J-Class America’s Cup, Ranger had secured victory.

Fast forward to 2009. The replicas meet and Hanuman demonstrates her pace to Ranger with a two-for-two victory. This time, no tired sails and crew and - advantaged by state of the art construction methods within the rules of the J Class Association - Hanuman makes it clear that, whilst the jury may be out, she has what it takes to compete and win.

Agreed. At least we still have builders that can build in the spirit of the past with modern advances. As I have always said, initially I never really liked classic boats since I grew up around relatively modern box yachts so never been exposed per-se to the classic craze of the early twentieth century.

However, with many builders and owners taking up the mantle to regenerate the classic craze, several builds have emerged in the last 10 years to say the least. I think it is this that really caught my attention especially so with "Nero" and "Anatolia". Seeing the detail on the "Erica", "Hanuman" kept me interested!

i remember the first time i saw the restored/rebuilt Endeavour, that was right after her restoration around 1990 I think. I lived on St Barths back then and she was a frequent visitors. She raced a couple of time in the Route du Rosé round the island regatta and it was just a real treat. Expecially back then when the "average" yacht was much smaller!

The first thing you'd see driving up the hill from the airport and into Gustavia was her tall mast, towering above everything else.

Nothing compares to the elegance and beauty of J Class.

last month in Newport we went for quick tender ride around the harbor and saw Hanuman at the dock, her long bow just jutting out from behind what was a beautiful yacht but which didn't even even compare.

Hats off to the owners and restorers who are helping preserving, and reviving, our heritage.
