Review: Feadship "Blue Moon"

Appointed with ultimate taste in cream colored fabrics and patterned carpeting, Blue Moon’s salon attains a decidedly home-like, welcoming aura of silk-and-satin elegance. Each couch and piece of furniture looks to be exactly placed and balanced, lighter materials against heavier/darker wood furniture and tables. Wall moldings and frames are crafted of high-gloss cherrywood.
At the salon’s aft main entrance Blue Moon deploys a hand-crafted model of the famed French square-rigger warship Belle Poule. This item was on display at the Amsterdam Maritime Museum until purchased and presented to Blue Moon’s owners as a present from the Feadship group.
Superbly arranged and luxuriously fashioned, the main dining room flaunts a full length mirror overhead, echoing the glamour of every memorable dining experience. Rich cherrywood paneling and exotic pommelle veneers are featured, as well as a dozen commodiously positioned dining chairs, plus the finest in tableware and crystal.
Blue Moon's well appointed office exhibits models of the yacht’s three various incarnations. Around the central desk are comfortable arm chairs and a classic-style globe on swivels, as well as book cases and office storage. Note the desk is only supported to one side, leaving ample leg clearance around the perimeter.
Not to be left behind are the business necessities. In the owner’s complex life – pleasure is always mixed with business. Today’s conveniences are readily cared for on Blue Moon, such as internet access without an unsightly computer taking up desktop real estate. With a flip-top lid concealing a monitor and keyboard, the owner's screen saver reminds him of everyone else's view.
The main lobby leads aft towards the main deck social areas and forward to the owner’s stateroom. The latter is reached through a long passageway with high-gloss paneling in a pommele veneer with cherry wood edging. The corridor also provides access to the powder room, as well as luggage & linen storage.
Full beam, wider than its fore/aft length, the master suite is a study in comfort and stylish design. Entered through the brief foyer where sliding doors port and starboard allow entry to the owner’s gym, and business office, the master suite features a king-size island berth at center, with couches and easy chairs arranged at both hull sides. Standing dressers and built-in, round-edged vanities are done in dark woods, contrasting with the cream overhead and deep-cushioned carpet. An ovate mirror in the ceiling adds to the visual scope of the room.
The marble-floored bath, featuring his and hers accommodations, sports Salome and Aegean Pink marble, while the dark woods and cream ceiling carry through décor accents. The separate baths also can be converted, by perhaps a future owner, to separate lodgings using the attached gym and office as sleeping quarters. Sumptuous use of marble on the wide sinks and counters, as well as vertical lighting and heavily gloss-layered wood surfaces, make this a spectacular bathing/dressing area.
Classically reminiscent, though less posh than the owner’s suite, this is one of the three forward and two aft provide staterooms. Slightly less elaborate then the master, they are still on the level of fine quality resort boudoirs and are arranged so they can be combined into two larger suites. The queen-size berths are set at a ¾ angle to fore/aft.
The guest area includes a lobby with icemaker and refrigerator, plus doors which lead to the guest suites, built around the staircase and elevator. There is also a guest gym offering storage space and an anteroom. Forward, crew’s quarters are separated from the guest areas, with a sound-proof door. They include eight double cabins and berths for crew up to 16. They also feature an open plan galley and mess. A dumb-waiter leads to the forward main deck and down to the tank deck. Crew reach the aft deck entertainment areas without entering the main interior space.
With today’s fitness lifestyle a paramount everyday inclusion, this owner has thought of everything, including a gym set-up which could give Bally’s a run for their money. A low impact, cross-country trainer and a standard treadmill are positioned in a room with a virtual view... a flat panel TV. All of them eagerly awaiting the push of that compelling little button; “Start.”
Blue Moon’s mammoth engine room, in diamond non-glare, non-skid white, easily engulfs every necessity and provides space for whatever may be yet to come. Twin Caterpillar 3516B-DITA diesel engines, 1492kW @ 1600 rpm, drive the 2x Wartsila fixed pitch five blade propellers reaching a top speed of 16.2 knots, with a 4,700 nm range.

To account for several events possible in large yachts, Blue Moon’s design also incorporates complex new safety innovations to circumvent and enhance fire control. In this arrangement, related groups of electrical components are fit into several dozen lockers fitted with thermal sensors. Strategically located, these smoke detectors – in bulkheads and overheads – are trans-mounted for double safety, preventing hot material from attaching to surfaces. Airflow is assured, temperatures monitored, wiring is low-smoke and halogen-free, materials are fire-retardant. In fire fighting, various zones are isolated, allowing the crew to be in control and take appropriate action. Built to Lloyd’s 100 A1, SSC, Yacht (P), Mono, G6, LMC, UMS, MCA specifications and certificates of compliance, Blue Moon is capable of a worldwide cruising scope.
Blue Moon is a singular yacht, a state of the art compilation of the very latest in megayacht design and construction. She is a vessel which, according to owners Richard and Judi Duchossois as well as Captain Emile Bootsma, could not have been built even 10 years ago, due to the progressiveness of her design and technology. An evolution of the best of the best, Blue Moon is destined to have large numbers of followers, but at this time and space, she is a leader. And so we sing a paean to this lovely lady...

...Shine on, Blue Moon, in creative yacht design and elegance. You are exquisite.
