I attended the 2004 SuperBoat International Florida State Offshore Raceboat Championships (say that 5 times real fast!). These pictures are from the open (or larger) classes, as I missed the smaller, more exciting classes, i.e. the 30 foot outboard cats.

I know, I know... these aren't yachts. But some of 'em cost as much! Some of our members enjoy fast boats (I know I do!) and for many of our European members, this is a glimpse into the American offshore racing scene.

These pics were taken at the Boca Raton inlet and offered a great vantage point for the same. I'll ad-lib a few of these pictures based on what I remember from years long past, so I may not be entirely correct, as much has changed since I was involved in the sport...

The first is AC Delco. This is a Donzi.

Bacardi. I'm pretty sure it's thottled by John Tomlinson, who is considered to be one of the finest throttlemen in the sport.

Callan Marine, owned by Dave Callan, a dot commer who's made a lot of money at a young age and channeled it into developing state of the art, offshore boats that have shattered several speed records.

This was the ex "Virgin". It was never sponsored by any of Richard Branons' companies, but the owner put the name on the boat to attract big sponsors. It used to be throttled by Tres Martin of Martin Marine, who also rigged it.

In-Mocean. These guys have been racing forever. ("forever" in offshore racing means more than 4 years, as most teams go broke before that!)

Another Donzi... JBR Racing. It's no surprise that Donzi has come on strong in offshore over the past couple of years. They have always built strong boats, but more importantly they have adapted designs that work well for offshore, including step ventilated, low profile hulls with sit down seating. Frankly, I always thought the enormous freeboard of older deep-v's was redundant and standing up was down right silly.

This is the Love Muscle. They've been racing forever too. How do they afford it? Ask yourself... what's the biggest industry to thrive on the internet and then look at the art on the hull.

Another Fountain, sponsored by Miccosukee Indian Gaming. I've never been a fan of "beak-boats", but I have to admit this is a sharp looking boat.
