A flotilla of U.S. Navy ships is heading up the East Coast to take part in Fleet Week New York, an annual celebration of the sea services.
The Navy said the ships set sail Monday morning from Norfolk with thousands of sailors and Marines aboard. They are due to parade into New York Harbor Wednesday morning for Fleet Week, which runs through May 28.
The ships are the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge, the guided missile cruisers USS Leyte Gulf and USS Monterey and the guided missile destroyers USS The Sullivans and USS Nitze.
After the parade, the ships will berth in Manhattan and at Staten Island for public visits.
