Sailing yacht UMATALU in Queensway Quay marina in Gibraltar today. Does anyone know who she belongs to? I ask because she was flying a Royal Navy white ensign on her stern and at that top of her mast a pennant with a red st georges cross with a crown in the center.

Hi,

As a Commonwealth citizen I will impart what I believe to be correct but am prepared to be corrected by anyone who knows the rules exactly :-)

The White Ensign may be flown by the Master if he is an RN or ex RN Officer of high rank, it may also be flown on vessels attached to the Royal Yacht Squadron ( there might be some ruling about the RYS Member being aboard, I am not 100% sure)

Thats what I thought K1W1, a good example is the yacht LEANDER G which flies the white ensign when its owner Sir Donald Gosling is on board. I think he is an hononary Commodore of the RNR (I may be corrected on this one) but I didnt think a white ensign could be hoisted if a visiting ex RN officer etc was onboard and I cant find anything on this vessels being linked to the RYS.

Hi,

As I wrote above I think if the RN or ex RN Officer is the Master he is entitled to fly one not just if he is onboard unless he is the Owner.

Is she originally one of the 25.8m Feadships Din-Dina III or Monara II built in 1969?

Hi,

Ron, - How do you know this for sure when you are not sure if it has stopped for bunkers or something else?

I said MAYBE. I was not definitive in my answer.

On a side note, Predator is surely an interesting design, she is growing on me.
