Another Mega-Yacht contract awarded to Blohm + Voss

Hamburg, December 10th, 2004

Following the signing of a contract for a large Mega Yacht beginning of November 2004, Blohm + Voss have announced today the signing of another contract for the construction of a large Mega Yacht. The Mega Yacht, going by the Blohm + Voss project name SIGMA, has been assigned the construction number978 970 and will also be delivered in 2007.

The spectacular Phillipe Starck (France) design for this 118 m yacht will be constructed under the supervision of “Blue Ocean Yacht Management“ under the lead of Neil Wade. At present, the same company supervises the refit of the 114 m MY “Pelorus“ at Blohm + Voss for a different owner (Blohm + Voss press release dated September 29th, 2004).

Like with any other yacht contract of Blohm + Voss, further details of the contract will be kept strictly confidential.

The signing of this contract is the result of an intensified strategic orientation towards the construction of Mega Yachts and underlines the competency of Blohm + Voss. These two yacht contracts will guarantee a good utilisation rate in the fields of construction and manufacturing of Blohm + Voss for the next two years. The future industrial corporate structure of the merger of the companies ThyssenKrupp Werften and Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft (HDW) that was announced as early as in October 2004 will ensure that the staff of HDW will also be involved in the contract works.

Interesting....

Some time ago I found this similar rendering on Starcks website and was thinking that nobody would ever build a yacht like that. Now, somebody appearantly is going to!

As a "semi-submarine", why not? In these days when anything that will turn heads is built and after Starcks entrance with Wedge Too, nothing surprises....

That said, I admire Starck as a designer and his sail boat interiors for Beneteau were strikingly elegant. This Megayacht might divide the opinion but will surely be noted!

To me the design has strong hints to the mega-yacht displayed in the Hollywood-movie "League of Extraordinary Gentleman".

I can't seem to locate pictures of that yacht, but it looks very similar, although it most likely it will not run on steam

This Design certainly will turn heads and hopefully open a whole new horizon for for yacht-designers.

As far as I can tell, this could revolutionize the yachting-industry since it would be one of the first hull-designs to completely stand out from the crowd. If they can make the hull-shape to be efficient and comfortable I am convinved they have a "winner" on their hands.

She may see some followers, but I don´t think she is a revolution in yacht design.
The 1921 S/S Delphine is a good example of a similar "wave-piercing" bow.

I rather think that "Sigma" will be a yacht remembered in the history of yachting in the same way as Eco, Izanami and LE 120, to name a few recent Megayachts sporting their very own profile.

Personally, I found the car rather memorable, if only for the over-blown gothic treatment not seen since the days of Figoni & Falaschi.

That looks familar! Haven't seen that rendering in years.

If only congressional committees hadn't cut funding to projects that weren't deemed critical to national security in the late 80's. Left me and my colleagues looking for work. Hard to find employment outside the defense industry with proprietary knowledge that couldn't be shared on a commercial venue.
