Bertram Sportfish on the rocks, upper Chesapeake.

yesterday as i was heading up the Delaware, I heard sector Baltimore talking to a boat reporting and assisting a vessel on the rocks in the Elk River. thought it would be a small boat but it turned out ot be a sportfish... there were 4 POB and one was injured...

not sure what could have happened, this took place at Pt Courthouse, about 1/3 mile off the channel so even a steering failure should have been recoverable.

I give these pics one day before Mad Mariner, BoatTest and Splash Vision swipe 'em and use 'em for their websites, as they have with SO many pictures from YachtForums!

Pascal, I just registered the pics with Digimark. Now we can track 'em anywhere on the web.

Carl,

Can I download the photos and pass them around in the office via e-mail? Also, did you notice the nice foliage in the background? We don't get this in South Florida

That is always a sad sight, no matter what the make.

Pascal, any mention of injuries to the 4 people on board? A sudden stop like that could have caused some serious injuries in the unpadded environment of a boat cabin. I certainly would not have wanted to be on the tower.

She is listed for sale on YachtWorld- 1995 46' Bertram. I'm sure you might get a "Reel Deal" on her.

It might have been Dry Rocked for Survey if it was for sale

What a mess, maybe they decided to "sell" her to the insurance company. Maybe they lost control of the engines/gear and weren't smart enough to shut the engines down.....I don't know.......

Where was she registered?

Boulder,CO or somewhere else in the Rockies.

Was the skipper getting in touch with his roots or just trying to get the bough around.

Spanish for a boat is 'barca' not 'bark-a'.

Leaf Erikson at the helm?

Background music by Bert Barkaroc.

Is that enough?

Very strange accident..........the only reason I could imagine is a steering failure.

too far off the channel to be a steering failure, there was time to recover. I dont know if he was northbound or southbound, but going northbound there is a 20 degree turn to port in the channel. looks like he missed that and went straight, as crazy as it sounds, it's almost like he was on AP and got distracted or left the helm.

on the chart extract below, he hit Pt Courthouse near the end of the road, in line with channel heading before the turn. In fact he was almost followign the range

I will wager that grog was a central factor.
According to Pascal's chart, going out of that channel would be akin to going off the road while traveling up a well-lit I-95.

After looking at the chart, maybe the Captain passed out while the boat was on autopilot or something. Sort of like that Northwest flight today!
