Review: Alaskan 80' Raised Pilothouse

The AC20 Autopilot computer plus an integrated bow-thruster interface allows the captain total control in all maneuvers. One 15” screen features a Simrad Black box 72-mile radar as well as Chart/Echo/Radar GPS. Connecting him directly to all locations ship-wide is a built-in intercom. Overhead, the Khalenburg T-1 triple air horn is switched through the helm as well.
Inside on the lower deck, the full-beam master suite is of course the most indulgent room on the yacht. Adding fine art to decorate the cherry-wood walls, and a curved, light-embellished headboard to the king-size berth sets off the artistic fireworks. Architecturally planned bed tables and stowage drawers make this the throne room.
Alaskan 80 features commodious sleeping and private arrangements, the most luxurious of which, naturally, is its master suite. Like the foyer of a successful man’s home, the master’s entryway seating is a prelude to the richness inside. Fine decorator fabrics adorn its understated couch arrangement, while the satin-finished cherry-wood wall-covering theme and geometrically designed windows include drawer/stowage patterns in the same mode.
Cedar-lined double, large hanging lockers as well as walk-in closets manage all-season costumes. A 42” EFA flat panel TV provides nighttime entertainment. Adjoining is the well designed and decorated master head/shower.
This shot of the VIP stateroom, forward, shows the striking cherry-wood and mahogany burl used as wall and furniture covering. The VIP presents a raised queen size island berth, with copious storage underneath, plus its own ensuite head/shower and a 20” Panasonic flat panel TV.
In addition to the VIP head pictured below, other guest quarters include a separate, smaller stateroom with bunk beds, upper and lower, also with its own ensuite head.
With the same level of décor and design as the larger suites, the guest twin stateroom provides twin bed comfort with a bed lamp and table/bureau between. Slatted windows provide ample daylight. An ensuite head is adjacent.
Crew quarters, air conditioned, include a pair of large single berths plus a food-prep counter with sink, microwave oven and refrigerator. With ample storage room, there is also a hanging locker, plus ensuite head/shower.
The stand-up engine room is well organized, boasting a pair of CAT C-18 diesels @ 1015 hp. Those hulking power plants drive the Alaskan 80 at speeds from 19 to 22 knots. Other controls include dual generators, stabilizers, bow thruster, inverters and electronic monitors/panels. Three engine room camera monitors continuously report all technical activity to the bridge. Naiad roll stabilizers control sideways movement. Watertight doors seal off the engine room, which is accessed from the swim step and by stairs from the pilothouse.
So, top to bottom, it’s easy to realize this Alaskan 80 is built for long term adventure, in style and comfort, to handle any sea, to every port. It’s all there, in this sea rover’s yacht; the dream of far away places with strange sounding names.

Jack London would have loved this boat!
