Review: AfriCat 420' Catamaran

This is the landing foyer and entrance-way to the master cabin. Headroom is more than ample for those over six feet tall, but as you step foward into ensuite facilities, you'll need to duck slightly as you pass through the bulkhead door that sections off the bath from the foyer.
In the three-stateroom model, the master suite features room, and more room; it takes up the entire starboard hull. Entered from the salon at the middle of the yacht, three steps down, at one end is the king size berth, wall to wall, with storage beneath. In the middle is a dressing room, with copious cherrywood hanging lockers and drawers; room for a loveseat if you want privacy. The entire space can be closed off, as well.
A close-up of the master. It's hard to believe... a King-size bed in the sponson of a 42 footer! Although a full walk-around bed makes changing sheets easier, you'll never fall out of this bed... no matter how severe the conditions are outside.
In the opposite hull are two more ensuite staterooms, one queen size and one double, one facing forward the other aft, separated by their individual heads/showers. These showers are not as spacious as the master, but are adequate. An option from the builder is for just one head between the two staterooms, but with a large, walk-in, sit-down shower. Storage drawers and lockers are underneath. All bedding is custom innerspring.
Engine rooms are set in each hull at the stern, for Yanmar engine options from 315 hp, to 440s. Easy to access, each hull presents a large hatch, and a few steps down to the engine. Servicing is simple. "Most of our customers are specifying the 440 hp option, now," Ford says, "simply because they get more speed." The top speeds can go from 29 knots to perhaps 35, and standard cruise will be anywhere from 20 to 25 knots. Range also depends upon the power option. At 20 knots the average range will be about 600 miles, but drop that down to, say, a leisurely cruise at 12 knots, and the range would easily double.

So, out of Africa, and into the U.S... AfriCat leaps onto the scene, purring for
your pleasure. If you're a cruiser looking for room, beauty, and go-anywhere performance,
take a look at the AfriCat 420. It's one very impressive little yacht!
