Every MTU boat I've run (mostly 12v183's), I hid in the salon until the massive amounts of smoke dissappated on cold start up. LOL

Although I was on a boat with MTU 16v2000's and (aside from one coming apart at 350 hrs), they ran great but were a bit noisy at cruise. Had a lot of turbo whine. Economy was good as well.
